Default Does this look a good buy ?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...e=STRK:MEWA:IT

As I'm still a little in-experienced and unsure as to the market values. Does this look a decent scoob for a first timer ?

Cheers

if you are inexperienced in the world of scoob then I wouldn't suggest this car. There is nothing wrong with Jap imports per se, but some of the older wrxen can be difficult for a novice. I find it a bit strange that he says that it has been looked at by a subaru main dealer. Back in the day (N-reg's) when these imports were flowing in; sub main dealers would not touch them, in fact, many would not even let owners buy small parts or park them on forecourts!

Also, I would take the 150mph+ with a pinch of salt. most of the imports were geared quite low because of Japans incredibly slow speed limit.

Look at the engine photo. It has a strut brace that is not standard on this car and not mentioned in the blurb. What else is non-standard about this car?

If there any experts out there... where is the VIN plate that should be over on the driver side at the back? is it in a different place for these models?

Cheers rapiddescent, nice to get a second opinion.

Car looks half decent, but my head is being clouded by the cash burning a hole in my pocket. But as you expertly pointed out there's a few things which as a novice I would'nt even have noticed. Have also mailed him about when cambelt was changed but reply was he hasn't done it in the 12months he's owned it. No guide as to when though !

Must resist, must resist..........................................!

Will try and hold on for a few weeks more and see what comes up.

There's plenty around.

Would rather buy from an enthusiast if I can wait.

Been to the Rally GB today so had my fix for a few days

Cheers again

I looks like it's gone now anyway.

You may be best to buy a car from either here or a dealer. I'm sure someone will be able to recommend a dealer close to you.

If i were you i'd search though the threads on here to get an idea of some of the problems you may encounter with an imported classic.

Sorry to disagree, but I think that is an excellent buy.

First off, the strut brace IS mentioned in the blurb. Secondly the 96 WRX will definately achieve 150+ mph once de-restricted, as they all are. Thirdly he mentions a Subaru main dealer, but not for servicing, just the change to MPH. The guy has fantastic feedback and is obviously genuine and willing to accept £4,500 for an immaculate example, from his description. And the VIN plate is on the passenger side, just in front of the strut brace and should read GC8C48D. Not visible in the photo though.

Can't believe someone on here, with obviously little knowledge of the early WRX has put you off! (Sorry, but that's the way it seems)

Look at the bidders, they have all got 0 or low feedback, chances are they won't pay up. Contact the seller through Ebay and ask him to contact you if bidder does not pay, leave your phone No. and then you can go and see it in your own time.

Hi Keefy,

I wasn't put off by the first reply. I agree the car looked clean and I am not to worried about Imports. And as you pointed out the srtut brace was mentioned, which I did read.

But there's always been something about Ebay. Ideally I would have liked to have seen the car before bidding cos I've been bitten in the past. I'm not into bidding and turning up and not liking something about the car and letting the guy down.

Went all the way down to Padstow once to look at a mint Sierra Cossie. 600 mile round trip that one was. Car was a bag'o'****e !

Prefer straight face to face haggling. Much more fun

Thanks for the input

Totally agree, would buy off Ebay, but only if I saw it first. I noticed when I was looking, loads of Scooby's sold on there and the bidder never paid, a week later, back up for sale! So don't give up on that one yet! Give him a shout.

One thing I forgot..... Have you looked into insurance, a big thing for many on these cars.

Have mailed him, lets see what happens.

As for insurance, I'm the wrong side of 35 so its getting better on that score. I knew getting older would have some benefits

A couple of youngsters where I work are paying in excess of £1500 for 1.25 Fiesta's so I'm geting a good deal in comparison.

I've also owned a few superbikes in my time, so know all about insurance nightmares.

All the best

You were right Keef69.

Just had email from seller. Both top bidders were complete timewasters, and won't be buying the car.

What a pair of w@nkers

Will let you know what happens

Cheers

i wouldn't worry about buying an import,my my96wrx hasn't missed a beat in 2 years of ownership and its serviced by a main dealer
i don't think i'd fancy buying a car off ebay,i prefer the test drive..haggle ..drive home method

pictures on ebay usually hide a multitude of sins. i have sold numerous vehicles on ebay and always include a lot of pictures - the pictures usually make the vehicles look immaculate (despite no photoshppery). i have never had anyone turn up to view a vehicle prior to auction end - i have had a lot of requests for viewings but they never turn up. i always state that the bidders should come and view the vehicle as photos can not replace viewing with ones own eyes. i have never been let down by a purchaser and vehicles have sold for more than i would have advertised them at. i usually delete zero feedback users bids if the auction is nearing the end.

i would not buy a car off ebay without seeing it first.

Only thing I would be concerned about (possibly) is that fact that the engine has been steam cleaned. He's going to get less money from eBay than selling privately, as most people seem to find out. Why go to the expense of steam cleaning the engine bay? My concern would be a leak or something that steam cleaning has removed and only, when the cars been driven a hundred miles or so will it materialise. I knowit's guessing, but with eBay and cars there is a lot of guesswork and the edict 'buyer beware' is never more so than this - you have no comeback as soon as you have paid your money, less than a private advertisment so do be warned...
