Wheels were 16 inch 5 spokes, Audio was some crappy (clarion?) Cassette player, seats should be bucket style in dark blue (late 99 cars) with silver strips, air con was an optional extra as was a sunroof.
Remote operated (by separate fob) subaru branded (iirc) alarm/immobiliser/door locking with keypad in the glovebox.
Metallic paint was option, red & white standard colours, metallics were dark blue, silver, dark green for UK cars.

The 1999 car continues the trend of fitting parts from the Japanese STi cars, including the front seats (although with a bit more padding) including height adjustment for the drivers seat; 4-pot front brake calipers and vented rear discs; and the high rear wing. Suspension, in line with STis, is now considerably firmer.
The front bumper has been slightly modified, being a little deeper and with just one vane (instead of two) and a naff orange plastic wedge outside the fog lights. The bumper now passes a 5 mph impact test. The fog lights and headlights have multifaceted reflectors and clear lenses.
The engine is a "Phase 2" boxer incorporating some changes to the head, and claimed power output is 7 bhp higher at 215 bhp (although torque stays the same).
Inside, the car benefits from cup holders and a slightly different Momo steering wheel. The car is at last fitted with a Thatcham "Category 1" alarm and immobiliser.

Not sure if this helps, but I think the only difference between 99 and 00 models is colour-coded door handles, variable intermitent wipers, and 6-spoke wheels. Air con is standard. Oh, and the fabled ECU change (99 is quicker).

Presumably 99MY cars were available from late '98, so if I am buying a '99 reg car it should definately be a 99MY?
Is the standard alarm Cat1?
What size are the standard tyres?

ollie,
Do a search on 801 or 802 ECU codes in Scoobynet.
Basically 3 different ECU's in MY99, MY00.
800 and 801 are 'good' (note the technical aspect of that statement ) and the 802's (most MY00) are not as 'good'. Plenty technical stuff when you search about boost targets/ignition advance etc.
Made a difference to me when I swapped my 802 for an 801.

Guess it would be about £800 normally, but this is highly inflated South East prices - might be able to get it cheaper elsewhere...
ICE in mine was a naff Philips headunit, but I'm not sure if this was original
Only minor inconvenience with aircon is if you wish to fit something decent in terms of ICE and you need to take a feed direct from the battery - without aircon fitted you can pass the power lead straight through the rubber grommet in the bulkhead that comes out just behind the glove box - very convenient. With aircon fitted, the space behind the glove box and the rubbger grommet are filled with aircon kit... you can get the power lead through it's just a bit of a fiddle...

I think the ECU thing IIRC is something to do with hesitance at around 3-4000rpm if you hold it there for a while and then try to boot it. I have a my99 wagon (late one) on a V plate, registered november 99 (myt be a my99 as it wasn't colour coded until i got my hands on it!)
Spec on mine, if it helps is bucket seats (very dark blue with lighter blue center panels, same material used on the door cards) facelift interior (updated dash, white dials, leather momo airbag stearing wheel, leather gear **** with leather gaiter, top center glove box) you should have a luggage cover in the boot and the rear seats will fold flat (bags of room). I.C.E. is handled by a bag of crap, subaru branded radio/tape player ( i think it's philips) you also get a Sigma (which doens't like being close to mobile phone masts ) Cat1 alarm with subaru branded plinkers and a key pad in the glove box. Mine has the aircon option, worth it if you can find it. oh, and there's the illustious 'Bright' switch for the interior clock dimmer!?!
Other bits that are noticeable are the 4 pot subaru branded front calipers, should have 5-spoke 16" wheels, facelift front end (bumper has indicator and orange brake vent wedge at the side of the foglights as apose to the older bumper with the 2 brake vents, also has crystal headlights and spots. Engine is phase 2 (you can tell by the single and offset to the passenger side coil pack on the inlet manifold
I'll no doubt have missed some stuff.
It's worth trying to get metallic/mica paint and air con though

Great thanks for the info, is it a direct swap or is some remapping required?
