Default Fuel For Thought

Now we all know that the petrol gauge on a Scoobie drops faster than a ****** knickers on payday - but, has anyone had the problem I have?

Last night, coming home from the coast, the fuel gauge was showing 1/4 tank - fine and dandy - THEN the needle drops quite quickly to the top of the E, middle of the E, bottom of the E, light comes on and the needle then drops off the scale. This happened over about 2 minutes - I honestly thought I had punctured the tank

But, then about 5 minutes later the needle rose back up to 1/4 tank?! needless to say I stopped in at the next petrol station and put in some 82p/Litre NUL!

OK, tonight - driving home from messing about with the boat on the River Thames - 1/4 tank again, M4 - needle drops just as before ...... right off the gauge!! Then, as if by magic, about 5 minutes later it rose back up to 1/4 tank!? and all was fine all the way home, arrived home and gauge is showing on the middle of the E (just as I would have expected)

Whats going on? Anyone heard of this before???

Sounds like a dodgy fuel sender unit (unit(s) inside tank).

Or just an intermittent wiring connection?

Had the same problem on my 02 WRX, thought the tank had a hole in it. Filled up and it hasn't done it since.

My fuel gauge just drops dramatically but that could have something to do with my driving style

82p p/l i guess you aren't using optimax then!! (86.9 in my local)
sounds like a bad connection somewhere, back of instrument, sender unit. you need a wiring diagram to check where the wires go.
