Question £120 to tell me what the problem is???

My car is at my local Subaru garage having a full respray, I asked the manager there if there workshop could check over the car whilst it was in there (this should be good for a laugh I thought...)

Anyway they've just called me to tell me it has an oil leak somewhere behind the cam cover but for them to diagnose what it is they'll have to take the covers off which will cost me £120!?.. What?.. are they taking the ****??...

My car is a 1998 UK Turbo.. has anyone got any where the leak could be, ie. is there any common seals that go around that area?... I guess I'll have to take it to another garage as I don't want to pay out to find where the leak is!

I'm going to check the garage but as far as I know there's no oil on the floor...

Cinders.

to take the cam covers off involves removing the cam pulleys and cambelt.. sounds reasonable to me

no, as thats at the back of the block.. and it is a 5min job if you have the box out, cluctch off.

then you can just unbolt the flywheel..

Your oil leak is 99% likely to be the camshaft oilseals..

ask them how much extra they will charge to fit the oilseals whilst they are there diagnosing the problem..

I would aslo add a new belt & possibly tensioner.

I had the nearside drive shaft seal go on me (I think??!??).
I knew I had a problem because I could smell burning oil down the nearside.
I had it looked at with a minor service.
bill as follows:

service (minor) £110
Investigation £120
replace seal and repack with grease F.O.C.

the guys generally will look after you if your nice, once my problem was identified the fix was a two minute job (their words) but the problem is knowing whats wrong.

why should they spend two hours looking at whats wrong for you to say, "thanks, right Im off to another garage for the work doing!"?

Hi Zen, my respray is only costing my insurance excess... it's a long story but they messed the first job up (bonnet, front panel, wings) and now they're doing the full car...

most likely to be the crank or cam oil seals which are normally done on the second cambelt change, (90,000 miles)

I had an oil leek from the rocker cover which apeared to be coming from the camshaft oil seal.Only found out after the whole lot was stripped down.
£120 sounds about right for stripping and refitting of the parts + cost of fixing the leak.
