Diesel engines are torquey (no bad thing) and economical (which some potential scooby owners might care about!), so I'd welcome the option. Have a read of the reviews of the BMW 330D - it's arguably the pick of the entire range.
Subaru have always been firm believers in flat engines, and I'm not aware of a production flat diesel anywhere - so maybe they're using the time (with the help of GM) to produce a diesel flat four?

Each to their own... I guess if subaru want to make a dent in the diesel market they gotta do it... Jag are now...
At the end of the day, people by impreza's etc for different reasons... The sport is a non turbo putting out 120 ish bhp and that goes for a normal familiy car...
I am suprised subaru havent done it sooner.......
Cooking oil powered cars will be next

This is a translated part from a German interview from March 2004 with Tanaka, CEO and President from Fuji Heavy Industries about the "Fuji Dynamic Revolution-1" (FDR-1) plans for Subarus future.
"When does Subaru bring the boxer Diesel?"
Takenaka: "We have finished the development of four and six cylinders boxer diesel engines from a technical view.
We however have not yet decided to produce them series, because Europe is world-wide the only market, which demands dieselengines on a large scale. With 45.000 selled units per year in Europe and a not quantified number of diesels it is not sure that the production will be economically possible.
Therefore we made still no fundamental decision whether we will actually produce the boxer Diesel."
So Subaru has obviously changed its view in a couple of months.
