Default 04 WRX Whistle Noise

Hello all, anybody who got a WRX 04 heared a whistle type sound coming from the rear windows when hitting the 60 mark (think the wind has to be in certain direction too)?

And its not the turbo

My MY04 has got a strange whine from the back somewhere too. It's a bit like one of those tubes that were around in the late 70's that you whirled round and round to make a low and high pitched whistle.

Mine also starts around 50-60 and sort of comes and goes. Demo WRX I drove had the same noise, so I'm not too worried.

On my WRX03...

I had a sticker stuck on the inside hinge of the wing mirror. Vibrated making a high pitched whistle at high speeds. Folded the mirror in and ripped off the sticker to fix.

Unhappy Need to Sort This

MY03 WRX I was on a private road going up to the Motor Show in Birmingham and when I tipped over the 130 the noise began

Now I've had the car well over this speed on more than one occasion (private roads of course) but never experienced this till yesterday.

Is this due to wear on the rubber door seals or does anyone know for sure what causes it??

Ive been following a thread closly on the nasioc forum for a while now and quizzed my dealer in south wales about this problem today.

Well my04 wrx has been making this strange noise at the 64 ish mph mark since new. It turns out today that some people have had new gearboxes as there is a factory problem identified.

So my gar is going down next week for a going over (gear box strip) so ill keep you informed.

I'd put my money on the window/door seals

My 2003STI had a terrible whistle/hum at 90+ when I got it...

To stop it I had to wind the window down 5mm (ish), stopped immediatly...but was not a real solution

now after 18 months, it's stopped anyway...

Mine does it at 67mph +-1mph. Not above. Not below.

Its not the gearbox. Definately sounds like its coming from a seal somewhere. Started a couple of hundred miles ago after a car wash. Drives me nuts.

I have the same noise on an 03 WRX.

The issue was originally thought to be a rear diff issue but after 2 new diffs in 6 months the dealer has all but given up and is waiting on IM for instructions on what to do next, and IM are waiting on Subaru Japan. I'm now getting to the stage of considering legal action - but will give IM a month to sort out a solution.

Basically, the noise is gearbox / drive train related on my car and happens at 61-63 mph (indicated speed on GPS device is 55-58 mph); the speedo inaccuracy could explain why people have a similar issue at different speeds. The noise is like running your finger around the rim of a wine glass, only a deeper tone. It also happens at 31mph, albeit almost imperceptible.

I’d be really interested to hear from anyone with this problem and also from those who’ve had it rectified by a new gearbox as this will help me pile on the pressure with IM for a satisfactory resolution.

Subaru.impreza.org, what’s the nasioc forum and can you post the link you refer to.

I think that the noise some people are referring to at speeds of 90+ is wind noise and unrelated to this topic.

Update from IM Technical Services Manager...

"My car may be missing a dynamic damper which is attached to the subframe and rear diff."

Hope he's right - seemed a helpful guy. It's in for a 20k service within the next week, so I'll keep you up to date.

Morning,

IM have approved the dealer to fit the part but it's on back-order. Hopefully it'll be here soon and will be fitted before Christmas, otherwise it'll be early Jan until it's done. Once fitted I'll update this post.

Wonder if IM will agree to any compensation, afterall I've been messed about / had to put up with a faulty car for over a year and so far I've made 8, possibly 9, visits to the dealer to get it sorted. Given that the problem isn't too rare I beleive it should have been diagnosed quicker and IM should really have been much more proactive in assisting the dealer.

My 04 WRX wagon has the same noise coming from the passanger window seal. It seems to be wind direction dependant but it can happen at any speed above 70. The dealer took a look at it but could not detect it on the day. I will bring it up again at it's 10000 mile service.
My previous 03 WRX wagon had a similar problem but not as loud.

check your back windiws are fully up - you may need to open the back doors to do this - mine do not always fully close if the doors are closed at the time!

like I've said previous, check the part number sticker isn't still stuck on the hinge bit of the mirror. Twas with mine and it whistled at speed.

Brief update as the work was done by my local dealer on Tue - odd that Subaru UK paid for it but it didn't go through as a warranty claim! Anyhow, their suggested fix did bugger all difference and the issue still remains.

So I'm now back to square one after 9 visits to the dealer network over the past year. *****.

This problem seems so common and it's defo tranny related. I get this on mine but it's barley noticable (05wrx) so maybe it is just one of them traites we all love and have to put up with..?

This is curious, as i have had a sort of howl since day one of my scoob at exactly 68mph, Not loud enough to worry about but just sort of there, I had put it down to some noise off the scoop or something ???? Tried it in neutral and the noise is still there ! have big probs selecting reverse though nearly always have to dip the clutch and back up again before depressing to select it and this has been since new ! Anyone else have this ?

Strange coincidence this. Noticed a noise today for the first time on my MY04 WRX which only occurred at around 67mph and logged on to scoobynet to see if I could turn anything up on the subject only to find this recent thread.

The sound is bearable I suppose but was going to try it again tomorrow. Thought like some on here that it was a wind or transmission problem but can't really tie down what it is.

Simpsons! - I also have the trouble with reverse gear selection. Been like it since new and assumed it was just one of those characteristics. Have to declutch twice to get it to engage. Makes for some frantic manouvering sometimes!

My dealer fitted the dampers to my diff on Friday. I can defo confirm that the bottle-resonance noise is diff related. Since the dampers have been fitted, things have improved. They've not cleared up entirely, but its definately much better.

The drone at 67mph is gone. However its been replaced by a much quieter drone at 62 mph. Its the same sound, but oh-so-much quieter. I guess the damper is doing its job, and the noise is a feature. You now have to listen for it. And with the stereo on, its all but gone.

It has gone from a very obvious and loud blowing-over-a-milk-bottle sound, to a noise that is no louder than the turbo whine.
