Question

My MY00 UK turbo was filled with Castrol Magnatec at its first service (Wilsons, Romford). I enquired about fully synthetic Mobil 1 5W 40 but they could not supply it as they claimed the minimum order was £3000-00 of the stuff and they were not prepared to order such a large quantity. Where can I get it (preferably in the Essex/East London area) and is it the best? I rang Scoobysport but they do not stock it, instead they use Silkolene Pro S 10W 50 which (obviously) they highly recommend. Which should I use? I rang Subaru UK who stated that 5W 40 Mobil is fine, and so is the Silkolene (as long as it has an API of SJ or above, they could not tell me if it had)

Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated

Strikes me that Subaru are full of 8hit then beacause I rang them this week and nothing less than 10w/30 or 10w/40 would do. No wonder this topic appears so much!!!

BTW I think you'll find your manual will say 10w/40 and recommend Shell Helix Plus.

Hello Otis

Is Shell Helix Plus fully synthetic? I want to change to a fully synthetic, otherwise I'll stick with Magnatec but change it every 3 months in between Main Dealer services

Thanks

ive just had my my00 turbo serviced and i wanted fully synth oil, i checked with the dealer before hand, and they arranged to get some in for me, rather than use the 10w40 semi synthetic they used the 5w30 fully synthetic (shell helix), supposedly shell and subaru have agreed to this (according to the dealer) but its still not widely available. Havn't had any probs so far, and the dealer should be able to provide it as shell is the recommended lubricant. Be warned, as i looked into this matter greatly (i just love synth oils!!) some oils will invalidate your warranty!!!!!!! especially the 15w50 mobil oil!! (info from mobil!)

Ernie,

Shell Helix Plus is semi-synthetic and Shell Helix Ultra is the fully synthetic. Both available at most Shell garages.

During my conversation with Subaru they said I could use fully synth if I wanted to but claimed they had yet to see any figures to say it would make any difference with the 7500 mile Subaru service intervals.

To throw another spanner in the works he spoke very highly of the Mobil 1 Motorsport which I believe is 15w/50.

Much confussion.

My dealer put Mobil 1 in at my 7500 service, charged me £36.80 for the oil alone!

what I want to know is how can they tell anyway?

is it that easy to test oil for its composition, or would they go back to the daler to see what he put in?
