buying advice
hi ppl,
seriously thinking about buying an impreza, can get my hands on 5k, what can i expect to get for this sort of money? what do i need to look for and are the specialized places around that deal with scoobys.
what about insurance, im 26 clean licence, 6yrs no claims what can i expect to pay, directline quoted me £1215.00 fully comp but must have a trackstar fitted (how much are these?) and must not be an import (thought the majority were imports) that was on a 1995 wrx, is this reasonable?
are imports clearly recognizable?
as u can tell i really have no idea what to look for so any help much appreciated.
thanks chaps

ok, seeing as no-one has responded here is the quickest of quick answers as i'm no expert:
* £5K can buy you a good 94/95 car privately (93 K/L from a dealer/specialist). there are lots of good/abused Scoobs out there so, my advice - get AA/RAC report to be safe
* there are some good specialists up and down the country - read through "Deaer & Third Party" section for good reviews. My experience says Scoobyclinic & TSL in Notts/Derbys
* as you probably know, ring as many insurance co's as possible - i think (unless rates have risen) you could get under a grand. check the "Insurance" forum for good pointers
*a few early import pointers: rear wash wipe (saloon), aerial on n/s rear qtr (saloon), air-con/climate control (unless lightweight RA versions which don't have), ally bonnet/bootlid (lightweight), no fog lights and possibly some indication on log book (think mine has)
ok, not such a quick response, but certainly not as indepth as it could have been (but then i am at work). someone will be along to supplemement or maybe even correct what i have put.
Kevin
ps i think Scoobyclinic have a black K plate for around the £5K mark www.scoobyclinic.co.uk

mine hasn't and is 10 years old in November - although it has had paint for certain mods and some accident damage. there was some very slight bubbling under the paint by the side skirt on the n/s rear arch, but thats the closest its come to rust. i don't believe Jap cars are undersealed, but i've not noticed any corrosion underneath in the 5 years of ownership.
i think most unlikely to have rust, but look out for accident damage repair (i.e overspray). a prang is not the end of the world if repaired properly, but if i was selling my car now, i would declare it to a potential buyer. if its a good car, the owner should have no issue with telling you what work (beit superficial or mechanical) has been carried out. if they appear to be hiding anything, they usually are!
hope this helps,
Kevin

For your insurance try Liverpool & Victoria, they did the best quote for me. Definately worth a try. 31 yrs old - full no claims - 3 speeding points - £620 Good luck with your scooby hunting m8

Scott,
the best advice I can give you is, take your time with what you buy. There are a lot of VGC cars that when you actually go to look at them have been crashed and badly repaired, badly painted or just generally abused. £5k should get you a 93/94 import which will probably come with red and dark grey interior. Most imports come with some form of mods but if you can find one thats standard it would be better. If you drop me a PM with your number I'll give you a call and point you in the right direction.
Cheers and good luck!
Mike

Did you get round to calling Tesco's as well - they insure me on my STi9 TypeRA import with no problems at all (just over 1K). Never known them to refuse anyone (even my mate got insured on his Evo VI when he was 23)

went to look at 3 at a dealers in penge,se london, there called autoselect... anyway he had 2 silvers and a black (which i really liked, loads better interior, sorry ppl but dont like the red and black) they were basically all the same, 94/95 ,models with roughly 80000 - 90000 km on the clock, what i wanted to know is that the guy basically justs puts them through the SVA test, and so are speed resticted and the clocks although read in MPH only go up to 110, this doesn't bother me a great deal but just wondered how much and where you could get this changed?? thought they were a tad expensive, (black 1 was £6995) although they all come with a yrs warranty.
