Question WRX PPP

I've done 3000 miles now in my WRX and am thinking I want PPP

What have people been getting on the dyno after getting it done?

Also, what's the exhaust sound like? Much louder? What kind of noise(s)?

I've got the PPP on mine haven't had it on a dyno and personally I wouldn't put my car on a rolling road or a dyno.

The exhaust isn't too noticeable in the car until you put your foot down ,then youll be left with a big

There has been a mixed bag of dyno figures for the 03 WRX.Some good -some not so good. You will find that no two cars will give the same consistent readings as there are too many variables.

Fuel used, temperature on the day, miles done by engine & even how it was run in will all play a part.

These are my figures.

Optimax - Hot 28 June 03 - 4,000 miles - Run in < 4,000rpm for 1,000 miles.
247 BHP @ 5,806 RPM and 239 LBS/FT @ 3,300 RPM

Optimax - Cold 15 November 03 - 8,000 miles - Run in < 4,000rpm for 1K miles
253 BHP @ 5,904 RPM and 252 lbs/ft @ 3,200 RPM

I have now done 12,000 miles & it feels like there is more there than on my last dyno run.So the Prodrive quoted figure of 260 BHP is in sight. The mid range torque increase is the gain you will notice the most in everyday driving.

Mark.

On my MY01 WRX the PPP was the best thing I did with it. It transforms the car, pulls from much lower down.

The fact that you get a great exhaust note is a big bonus - in my view the car sounds like a tractor without it. You only need to hit 2.5k and it starts to growl, but it never gets manic (and tiring) like some of the other exhaust upgrades you can get.

In terms of dyno figures the 03WRX seems to be a bit lairy and inconsistant. For example, my own car made 248bhp 234 lbft @ g-force on a cool day, then (with a drop of octane booster) made 252bhp and 251lbft at power engineering on a hot day a few weeks ago.

This is a NON PPPd car.

When at g-force a PPPd car went on after mine and got 227bhp and about 227 lbft. I think that if you have the PPP fitted you should compare it to some other cars on a dyno day (making sure its on the same day) as then you may be able to get a more accurate answer to if its performing correctly.

exhaust does sound nice with PPP

Just my 2p.

Neil.

P.S. the only modifications to my car are a green panel filter and a backbox.

I was with Neil at the PE day a couple of weeks ago - all he has on his WRX is an exhaust change!
I got my 7000 mile PPP wagon to do 265 bhp (182 @ wheels) @ 5940 and 263 lbft @ 3600 - ambient was 21 deg C.
There was also an STi PPP which crawled into the 270 bhp mark so there are some very variable PPP figures for some people.

If IM should get any criticism for major PPP non delivery then perhaps a single RR day with PPP, std and tweaked WRXs (like Neils) should be run.
There will always be some variation between cars and apparently a marked step between bug and blob eye PPP.

It may also help make sense of figures across different RRs if the power at wheels is quoted, as transmission loss curves seems to vary from place to place.

IMHO the exhaust sound is nicer than the Scoobysport one I had on my old car. Its not so raspy and has a softer bass note.

PPP is well worth doing IMHO if you value the warranty (that old chestnut ) but it would be very interesting, and logistically quite difficult, to get your car dyno'd 1st thing in the morning and then take it to have PPP fitted, then return to the RR on the way home. There will be some atmospheric difference between the start of the day and the end, but it will ensure the same fuel, same car and same RR is used and is about as close to a scientific comparison you could do.

Don't know where you are, but would it be feasible, as I would like to see the results.

Does PPP require going from 95 RON to Optimax? Or can one continue to run on ordinary unleaded?

Optimax highly recommended, but not absolutely essential. If you do have to use semi-skimmed don't push it too hard or carry some octane booster to top it up a bit.
