I dropped an 8mm spanner whilst tightening the IC intercooler hose jubilee clip to the turbo outlet. I knew it was sitting on the block somewhere but I just couldn't find it.
In the end drove around. A few days later heard the tinkly clang, couldn't be arsed to stop and look for it (it was at night). BTW for a split second I thought WTF was that until I remembered it was that spanner

Unlikely to cause serious damage if it drops out. All the same you should get in there with a torch and have a good look. There are very few places it could go without you being able to see at least part of it.

It might not be so funny if it hits a car. If it hit mine, I'd return it stuck in the other cars bonnet
I'm not sure what inspiration you expect from here. As GM said, get a torch and have a damn good look - there's not many places it can hide. The engine and gearbox is just two big lumps of solid metal with very little hidy-holes.
You could always go to a local scrappy and ask if they could put their big electro-magnet over the car and see if the screwdriver flies out

look under the car at the big black plastic sheet (if it has one).
tap about front and rear of this sheet and you will probably here all manner of things jingling about.
I unclipped the front of mine and almost found an entire tool kit!

Found a nice 12mm Facom spanner when I changed the oil on my new clio 172. Bonus I thought, this was after 5000 miles.
Don't worry it won't go far, unless it jumps up and gets caught up in the timing belt very unlikely.

Try buying one of these small extendable shaft magenetic head tools like http://www.uk-piano.org/heckscher/398.jpg and rummage around with that.
