Default Powerchip? Anyone had one of these installed?

I have just purchased a 2001 WRX (UK) & the engine check light has come on. I have spoken to the original owner (Traced through the Dealer) & he has told me that it does it from time to time since he had the Stage 1 Powerchip installed & the Place that fitted it (Collins in Congleton) said it was ok & nothing to worry about? Does anyone have any opinion on this? I thought the car was bloody quick for a UK

Hi
im no expert but have been told that the best re-map etc is a Tex3 as it uses the original subaru chip and re-programes it and is maped to the individual car, and the likes of superchips etc are a bit crude as they are a mass produced chip that slots into the ecu and isn't specific to your car, and can cause problems

hmm, does anyone else have any views on this? should I remove it? where do I stand on the warranty? it is a 31/12/01 Registered (can you believe that someone would buy a car on that date!! only 1 more day & it would have been an 02!)

could be a warrentie issue, as its a non PPP performance upgrade the dealer would be able to see it as, i think supperchips will be stamped all over the chip, were a tex3 is only visable by pluging the car into a pc with very specialised softwere, as its still the standered chip on the outside.

In what way?

should I remove it?
It'd certainly be worth finding out why it's causing a CEL. I wouldn't simply take "don't worry about it" as an answer. I wouldn't try and dive in to remove it either at this point in time. Depending on what and where it is, you could make problem worse.

Try and find out exactly what it is. Is it a proper remap, or some sort of boost clamp?

where do I stand on the warranty?
If you mean the original Subaru warranty, that was technically invalidated the day this device got fitted. When you bought the car did the dealer sell it with their own warranty, or was it sold on the basis that there was still eight months of the manufacturers' warranty remaining? If it was sold under the dealer's warranty, you should still be covered as the car was sold as seen, chip included.

it is a 31/12/01 Registered (can you believe that someone would buy a car on that date!! only 1 more day & it would have been an 02!)
May have been pre-registered for some reason, quota filler or something. Car dealers work in mysterious ways, and so do car buyers come to think of it!

02 model available from October 01. 02 registration started in March '02. Therefore 31/12/01 is not a significant date re 01/02. The fact that most places are shut on 1 January means 31 Dec is quite a sensible purchase date, particularly when dealers offer quota filling discounts.
