when mine was on the way out the revs at idle were droping and rising all over the 1000rpm range, at points it went realli low and nearly cut out.

My car started cutting out when stopping at junctions and like Subsy's motor, idle speed was up and down like a brides nightgown.

idle speed all over the place, cutting out.
with the new drop in prices of subaru parts, it'd be interesting to see how much it will cost you, mine was £88 fitted.

as said above, but be careful as the ECU will compensate for the failing maf and your scooby will start to idle ok again but this is just waiting for the inevitable to happen as ur engine will now be running far too lean.

dont doubt, get it checked and changed ASAP

Flip me - my Scoob started doing the irratic idle thing at the weekend, so good timing for this thread! Sitting at the lights, the revs would drop so low that the engine would nearly stall...and then suddenly 'catch' itself and bump the revs up to around 1200.

Am going to get this booked in for a new MAF sensor asap, but how long can I run the car in it's current state? Does the sensor suddenly just pack in and leave the car undrivable?

I've got a trip from Leicester to Dagenham planned at the weekend and don't fancy coming home by an AA flatbed!

Mr Fusion don't fret too much , looking back the MAF on my (MY99) was playing up for quite a few months but as has been said earlier the ECU corrected itself so I thought all was well , until a few months later when it started stalling again . Get it sorted as soon as poss but as long as you drive with care you shouldn't need the AA . It's only a couple of screws to do it yourself if it's a MY99/00 , so if you can get the part try a bit of DIY .

Thanks Dave - that's good to know. Think I'll take my finger off the panic button for a while!

I was just checking for Subaru dealers in the Midlands (anything apart from Leicester!) as I'm as mechanically adept as much as my cat is.

Went for some petrol earlier and the problem seemed to be even worse! Bah!

Mr Fusion , mine used to have good and bad days too , but a new MAF sorted it straight away , it was more economical too due to the engine runnig lean , but this can cause damage to the engine , if you have any doubts try a search as it's been covered many times and I'm sure there's some good advice in there , good luck

Dave
