Idle Valve + CEL

Idle Valve + CEL
Took my car for some new oil (shell helix ultra 15w50) and diff and gearbox oil plus new oil and fuel filters and plugs today.
thought id try and solve my erratic idle problem. the mechanic took off the idle control valve and it was very dirty and had little cuts/grooves on the rubber cone. is this fixable or fooked? idle problem is almost worse now.
also, tried to check CEL codes on my car, but the CEL just does not go off when the ignition is in the 'on' position. and i did it correctly as the mechanic tried too. is this due to a remapping/piggyback/new ecu by the previous owner?
sorry forgot to say car is a my99 imp turbo.

to decode your cel
you need to have the ignition off and connect the cel diagnostic wiring
its either black to black or green to green, you need to confirm which before
connecting up (someone here will correct me)
turn the ignition on, the cel will kick off its flash sequence
once you have copyied the sequence and decoded ot, you need to clear the cel.
to do that you connect b to b AND g to g if you search the posts you will see the reset procedure
re the idle valve,, remove and clean with carb cleaner or similar clean all the gunk from the hole and lubricate the solenoid
refit.. (if the rubber has gone west, then you will probably need a new one)
hope this helps

yeah i connected black to black, then turned the ignition to 'on' but the CEL light comes on and stays on (along with all the other lights on the instrument panel) is this due to the ECU being fiddled with?
confirmed i need a new idle control valve, but its available no where in kenya. how much does the bit cost in the UK?

If the cel comes on at startup ie ignition in acc posn that is normal.
When the engine turns over and starts, the cel should go out.
if it remains on, you have a fault, which needs to be investigated.
if you know the fault has been cleared do a green green black black connection and reset the ecu..
then if another fault occurs, you can spot it
hope this helps

i thought it would be the maf sensor too, but after removing the idle control valve and messing around with it, i made the idle worse, so im sure its that part thats fooked.
thanks eddie h for the price... Subaru Kenya want about 300 quid! Am looking for a second hand bit.
