Has anyone fitted a K&N on a MY99
I have been advised to remove my ITG filter from my MY99 RB5 due to possibe MAF sensor problems. Has anyone had problems fitting a K&N to a MY99?

The K&N induction kit is one of the safer ones as far as lack of vibration, MAF accuracy and contamination are concerned, but a panel filter (K&N, STi, Green) is a safer option again, and just as good from a performance point of view.

Hi
Induction kits are probably even more risky than the ITG filter where the MAF is concerned - plenty of threads on this.I had both on my MY99 (at different times ;-))but got scared after hearing too many stories regarding MAF failure.Try a K&N panel filter or a green cotton one which is what i have now.

Me being the exception to the rule....i ran an ITG panel filter on a 99 car and blew 2 MAFs, switched to a K+N induction kit and so far no MAF issues, i don't think any filter is totally safe, including the standard one!!

I have a my99 with a K&N induction kit. I did have a ITG filter on it but the **** that came off the filter was amazing. I have had the K&N on for 6 months now with (touch wood) no apparent problems

IMHO they all cones sound horrible and dont do much unless you remap the car and give them cold air. I still think any extra power gained is purely where its leaning the mixture out, and im convinced they sap the torque.
Stick with the STi, K&N or Green panel filter.

K&N Panel filter - no problems and Subaru dealer say nothing about it either!
Induction kit - forget it - no real performance help (usually worse from previous threads) and too many hassles.

A really dim question - how do you fit a K&N panel filter?
There was one on my MY99 when I bought it but I had it removed at the first service to keep my Subaru Proven warranty intact.
The dealer put the filter plus 2 bits of foam in the box the OEM filter came in - it looks like the 2 long bits of foam stick in to the airbox at either end, but I then can't get the filter in.
Help!!

I had a K and N on my car for over a year. I liked the noise it made, but thats just a personal thing. I did need a new MAF when the new turbo was mapped in because delta dash showed it up to be on its way out. Whether this was due to the K and N or not is a matter of oppinion.

When I got my MY00 it had a Pipercross induction kit on it, after reading about all the potential MAF problems on here I immediately took it off and put a K&N panel filter on. This felt so much better performance wise, torque felt improved straight away so I'd stick with the panel filter. Personally I think induction kits are better suited to normally aspirated cars, had one on my CRX VTEC and it was fantastic!

Tomcat,
When I got my K&N panel filter it came with the 2 pieces of adhesive foam, IIRC they are for fitting the filter to a Nissan (Impreza K&N panel fits a few different cars). You dont need them for fitting to yours.

Interesting question, RB5.
wrx - are you still on your original MAF sensor?
It seems like some people get away with it and others don't. A failed sensor may not be due to the K&N since, as we all know, even when left std a lot of people have had MAF failures. My original sensor needed replacing on a std MY00 PPP after just over 2 years.
Also, I understand the replacement sensor was a slightly updated design to the original and is said to be a little less fragile. Would this stand an even better chance of coping with a K&N 57i, compared to the original, extremely fragile, MAF sensor?
As for the comments above on the benefits of fitting a 57i kit, I'm assuming those people are talking with ref to a straight swop, from panel to induction kit, and not talking about fitting the kit in conjunction with a remap. I'm sure a mapper will have his reasons for suggesting a change to an induction kit, even if I don't have a clue what these reasons might be.
