Default What Impreza can I get for £5k?

Hi all

I'm a newbie, go easy on me

Basically I've just sold my Fiesta RS, have £5k to spend and am wondering what to get next.

I originally wanted a Nissan Pulsar GTI-R but now im looking at Impreza's as well.
Thing is Impreza's are generally pretty expensive for the turbo model arent they?
(I'm not interested in anything without a turbo )

What could I get for £5k? Anything with some minor mods for example or should I look at another type of car?

Cheers in advance!

Welcome
The first thing to do is check out how much these cars will cost you in insurance, then find out about running costs (6 monthly/7.5k services, whichever is first) with some ranging from 100 to 500 quid.
You need to know what your getting into when buying a scoob, if your pretty young then you will be hammered on the insurance front, im 35 and pay 1150 fully comp protected on my scoob (full ncb) so it could cost you alot.
As for buying, there are plenty out there, lots are dogs with no service history/lack of service history, lots of imported cars, some of which will look like bargains but will burn a big hole in your pocket.... and at the price your looking at, you will have to lay out a few bob to get them up to standard.
The Autotrader is a good place to start though, id go for a garage over a private sale if your after a warranty, and get the car inspected/hpi'd if possible.

Hello there.

Have to echo Tony's comments about insurance, find that out first, no point in getting the car and finding it'll cost a fortune to insure.

As for what you can get, well, an early WRX would no doubt come in around that price, just make sure you have a nice local place that'll be able to service it, as subaru dealers won't touch an import.

I had a 94 WRX Wagon for three years, was insured by Schofields. Think it started off at about 1200 quid, and the final year (last year) was 850 odd quid I think. And it was moddified too, but I was 28 with 7yrs no claims, so that possibly helped too.

Really does pay to get a specialist to look the car over for you, will make sure the engine and other oily bits are in good nick.

Oh i tried them, had a laugh at the quote (this was for my classic MY00 with PPP and a few other minor mods, ended up at 950 with L&V) but their quote was over 2k, even for my new car, over 1800 quid, not over keen on them as you can tell

Celica GTFour TPF+T £318 Tesco

quoted £680 Comp for a Scooby

25, 5yrs NCD SA14 postcode

Get a Celica GTFour!!! Scooby performance and handling for £2K or even less... and they won the WRC with the Celica, unlike the Nissan (which is undeniably a fine car, if a little fragile in the gearbox dept.) (then again the Celica ST185 can be a bit fragile there too..)

for that amount you could get an ST205... but they're GAY!!!

Right well I have £5k to spend on the car plus another £1k for insurance give or take a few hundred

I'm 23 and have 3 years NCB plus a compleatly clean sheet which all plays a part. Thanks for the advice so far, I'll look at the Celica option as well if they are worth a look. If I did get one I would only want a later shape model...

Stoned, I can help you get a WRX with 12 mths MOT & 6 mths tax for £4,200, or a Pulsar for £3,700.

I reckon the minimum you'll pay for a GT4 is about £4,800 though. (Sorry, talking about 4 headlught model. I forget about the older one!)

E-Mail me if interested.

My old man's considering an Impreza. He's also looking to spend about 5k on a Wagon. He's not interested in modified cars, and running/insurance costs aren't important. What age of Wagon do you reckon he could get for that sort of money?

Your old man can expect to get a 1994/5 on an M plate for that money.

I know of an MY97 wagon for £4000 if you are interested.
I owned it 2 years ago - it was full history when I sold it.
The guy who bought it has P/Ex'ed it against an MY01 at the garage where I sold it.
Don't know the current mileage however.

Just visit his ebay advertisement for the BARGAIN info and url

only joking mate, but had to do it.

To be honest I'd prefere it if all scoobs had an honourable death when they got to the value of £5k or less. I know it sounds a bit harsh, but since owning mine I've seen too many people on here that moan about boy racers (not saying your one) , the impreza image and the falling prices of our beloved scoobs.

I like many others dont like to see dead scoobs and from reading here its quite an achievment if many make over 70,000 miles, but as was mentioned before look hard into the price of running one, servicing one and insuring one because they all hit the pocket hard. Saying all that , if you decide to take the plunge, you'll be grinning for months to come

hope you find what your wanting

Phil

I spoke to my old man about it again today. He says he'd even be happy with a Sports Wagon (no turbo, eek!). Presumably that would open up more stock?

I'm not suggesting that all older cars are thrashed, and I know that a lot of older scoobs are in mint condition, but I am suggesting that a proportion of older cars will be past the sell by date, due to poor maintenance etc etc.

Been looking for my m8 recently and anything under 5.5k, maybe even 6 is gonna cause alot of trouble if it's a saloon, wagon should be ok cos they are cheaper. Lots of dogs about for sure, and lying sellers (go on the seller, not the car at that price).

Here's how to get a decent import WRX for less than £5,000.

Go to a windswept field in an unfashionable corner of Bristol. March through the lines of 4x4s towards the smell of frying burgers and onions, past the men with greasy comb-overs and dirty fingernails. The people here aren't in IT, they smoke roll ups.

You'll wonder why you came, and you'll certainly believe that the mark up on each of the 250 cars lined up for auction is around £200 Reserve. There are no expensive dealerships or men in smart suits here. This is where the trade buys.

Then you'll see a WRX, turning a wheel for the first time on UK soil, and you'll wonder at how fastidious the Japanese are, and why you never see a UK car of that age in such good condition. The car is the star here.

When the WRX rolls past the rostrum, you'll be amazed at the price too. Because when it sits on your local forecourt, £2,000 will have been added to the price after costs. When you see it in your local paper, £1,000. And that's why you'll think you can't get a good one for less than £5,500.

If you can stretch your money to £5950 I am selling my white 1996 5 door turbo, 80,000 miles totally standard, full service history, imaculate condition and transferable Subaru Warranty.
Last service in January at 78,000 miles. ( I service every 6 months)
Picture on Auto trader web site.
I got greedy and bought an X reg with low miles and owned by a mate with loads bits done to it.
If interested can give more info if reqd.
