I have just fitted my Knocklink and found that the loom from the sensor to the unit itself had the red and black wires the wrong way round!!!!

I quickly turned off the ignition and changed the connections around in the loom (sensor side as I imagined the unit would be right after testing).

************************************************** *****************
Branko at BRD is aware of my problem and has asked for anyone else finding a problem to verify with them first before attempting to modify the wiring in any shape or form. Its looks to be an isolated case.
************************************************** *****************

These are the pics of my installation

Wiring through the bulk head using the grommet behind the clutch fluid res.

Knocklink sensor in position, but angle it the other way or the intercooler wont fit back on.

The wiring at various stages. Note: Solder the connections to make sure of accurate readings.

Underbonnet work completed. Keep all the wires away from heat sources like the turbo.

Mine is now set at max sensitivity on a 97 WRX and only shows 1 green light at WOT. This is after a very short run after warming up and running the following

Optimax and millers OB
Induction Kit with K&N Filter
Performance up-pipe and downpipe
Zero sports ECU.

Hope this helps!!

WOBH
Thanks for the warning! Will double check mine. What made you realise they were the wrong way round?

Matt,

When I plugged the unit into the harness after completing the wiring I got no response at the unit. So I unplugged it and made sure the power was getting through and thats when I noticed it.

Not sure if it will do any damage as mine still works, but you never know.

as far as i am aware it does not matter on the sensor which way round the wires go.

how have you tested the sensor. i have to whack the sensor with the back of a screwdriver to light mine up.

taken from the stefan ostadal

Next connect the Knocklink wires to the Bosch Jetronic connector. The Knocklink manual states that you should check which pin is ground by performing a continuity check on the sensor. This doesn't work and I've been informed that the manual is incorrect for this type of sensor and it doesn't matter which pins are connected to which wires.

I wired the Brown => Pin#1, Black => Pin#2 and mine works fine.

Donutman,

Its not the sensor wiring, its the power feed into the Knocklink unit, ie +12v and earth. As you have said it makes no difference to the operation if the sensor wires are connected either way, but they are brown and black mate and not red and black!!

Also, I think that hitting/tapping or any other contact with the sensor is a very bad idea. Hit the manifold as I did and you will get the lights lighting up, even the top one.

So can anybody from BRD or anybody else that knows this product confirm if the units wire needs to be a certain way. or are they wired the wrong way. As i have already ordered mine. Do these units need setting up with Det Cans to adjust the sensitivity.

Sub,

The information above is correct.

The sensor can have the wires to it anyway it likes.

My problem was that the harness was put together wrong with the red and black power wires being incorrect. I had red from the knocklink going to black on the harness and vice-versa.

i thought you were on about the sensor.

it might help others if you could take a pic of the correct way for the power leads to be in there connector.

glad you have it working anyway

Donutman, No probs mate. Good idea about the pic though.

Sub, I am referring to the harness that is supplied with the knocklink kit. The unit has about 5 inch of wires before a white plastic plug, then the harness I refer to has its own white plastic plug that fits into the first one and has the wires that you will connect to the sensor and a power feed (+12v and earth. these have bare ends.

You should be able to see from this pic what I am talking about. Its the bit highlighted in yellow. This is where the wires were in the wrong way round. Just make sure that when connected you have red-red and black-black. I had red-black and black-red when the 2 blocks are pushed together which = BAD!!!

Just read this after fitting mine.......but pleased to say mine went in OK. Just need someone to tap the engine block with a spanner as I cant seem to get the lights to flicker on WOT, however I always run on optimax!

Pleased you got it sorted.
