Just thought I'd share some info with you all for those looking to get a "new" car..... I've come across the following info on stolen V5 documents (veh log books). It mainly seems to be in the Midlands at the moment - but there's no reason to believe other areas wount be effected....

More than two dozen people in the West Midlands have fallen victim to the cloning scam, in which stolen logbooks are used to dupe unsuspecting buyers. West Midlands Police today issued a warning to second-hand car buyers to be vigilant for the fake registration documents. The blank documents should have been destroyed last year but went missing en-route from Sheffield to the Swansea-based DVLA where they were due to be shredded. Now they have started to turn up in the West Midlands accompanying stolen off-road vehicles and works vans, many in the last few months. So far more than 25
people have fallen victim to the scam, handing over between £10,000 and £20,000 for vehicles later found to be stolen. The vehicles have been handed back to their original owners or insurance companies. Det Con Andy McWalter, of the force's stolen vehicle team, said the blank registration documents allowed crooks pass off the vehicles as genuine. "The is a highly organised crime in which a national network seems to have filtered into local pockets of organised vehicle theft," he said.
Car buyers are urged to look out for registration documents with serial numbers in the ranges AP 8022601 to AP 8024400; AP 9424801 to AP 9426600; AP 9430201 to AP 9432000; AP 9435601 to AP 9437400; AP 9448201 to AP 9450000; and AN 8854201 to AN 8859600. To check whether a document is genuine, call the DVLA on 0870 241 1878 or report it to their nearest police station.
