quickshift air cone thingy!!!???!!

anyone know about quickshift air induction cones? a friend of mine took his off after blowing a MAF sensor and is offering it to me free. not sure wether the maf blowing was due to the filter or not, but do i go for it and cross my fingers?

If the V5 in your screen name implies you've got an STi version 5 (or indeed any other MY99/00 turbocharged Impreza), passing on this induction kit might be the most sensible move.

The only MAF problems I've heard of with these(stainless steel)type of filters is that if they are not secured properly problems can arise due to the amount stress/movement placed on the MAF housing
But as I say I've had no problems and it sounds great

In that case, the MY98 cars are less fussy about induction than the '99 and '00's, but that said, there's still less risk of misreads and MAF damage with a good panel filter than there is with a cone. What model year is your friend's car?
Entirely up to you whether you want to risk it or not, but given that there's next to nothing to gain, I'd be tempted to leave the car as-is, or if you're desperate to change, get something that'd be guaranteed to do something positive for your new baby.

Darren, yes they do sound great, this quickshift sounds pretty much the same as the k+n kit, silly i know, but i just gotta get one
Greasemonkey, this is where im not sure, he has a 98 s plate, but i think it is a MY99, it has smaller front indicators than mine, and 4 pots as standard, and its a uk turbo.
spoke to him last night, he says he was informed by PE that due to the bottom of the cone being square, where it connects to the MAF, this bounces the air back and forth and confuses the MAF causing failure, unlike the bottom of a k+n which is round, which they sold him, when they fixed the MAF!!!

Yes Cliff, as you suspect, your friend has an early MY99 car. Yours is less susceptible to MAF sensor damage, but it's probably just as prone to MAF misreads.
If PE reckoned this filter would cause turbulence and misread problems on a '99, odds are it'd also do something unwanted to a '98. Your choice of course but safe is always better than sorry, especially when there's little to gain and potentially a big repair bill if you lose.
