There I was tonight in my UK MY98 turbo driving home from my brothers , doing 30 in 3rd (in a 30 limit ), enter national speed limit, accelerate to get it up and into 4th..........BANG ! CRUNCH ! RATTLE
So, i've now lost 3rd gear ............well not entirely true, its still there, just sat at the bottom of the gearbox
Anyway, its already at a garage (friend of the family - subaru rally car builders) and its gonna be stripped out tomorrow
Obviously 3rd gear has been stripped and there may be damage to the others (although they drive ok )
however, questions is; is it worth replacing the sha99ed shafts/cogs with something special instead (i'm on a tight budget, so no £2000 stuff )or just go OEM UK stuff ??
chris
BTW
Cars done 60k, ive got an AP organic clutch, STi release bearing & lightened flywheel (fitted by TSL at 50K) and i changed the gearbox oil (Castrol Syntrax) less than 4k ago.

It depends on your engine spec whether its worth upgrading or not. A tip is to overfill the gearbox by 5mm on the dipstick, as 3rd gear runs dry when its set to the normal Max indication level, it certainly helps with my STi on track making it quieter and more consistent as heat levels rise.

thanks john, i doubt i'll ever get anyywhere to 300 bhp let alone exceed it, so i guess a std replacement is adequate enough. john banks pointed this out in my drivetrain thread.
reason i asked about upgrading the internals:
Obviously i did countless searching & reading up before i posted, but i found from the posts i read it seems to be MY98 gearboxes and 3rd gear failng all the time.
