Tell me somebody, A Subaru Impreza WRX STI TYPE RA. I know this model is a light weight race chassis, but for insurance purposes does this car come under a normal WRX STI insurance.

The reason being is that I went to look at a 1996 N Reg subaru impreza wrx sti type ra today in rally blue, looking very smart i must say. Anyway on norwich union website they have quoted me £582 fully comp for myself 56 yrs old and my son 25yrs old with 3 yrs no-claim, this was choosing the wrx sti description as there was not no description for this model of car.

If somebody can help by either confirming if the type ra comes under the normal wrx sti, this would ease my mind so I can then purchase this car.

A 1996 N reg will not be a version 5 just in case! Insurance wise it shouldn't make any difference...we'll it didn't for me!!!

to answer the original question, no it isnt the same car as a normal WRX STi in terms of insurance, you must specify the full model name otherwise you may be uninsured. The RA's have significantly diferent specification to normal STi's.

Cost or even ability to insure with that particular company may be diferent.

i would ring the insurance company and try to speak to someone knowledgable. There are numerous versions of impreza on the import market, all with varying specs and costs associated with them. They generally don't get listed individually on the more prominent insurers websites, as most don't touch imports.

As it is, with a young person named on the insurance of this type of car, the quote seems too low, in fact I'd be surprised if they don't have a minimum age on the car when you inform them of the actual model, if indeed they will insure it.

suggest you read this to find out about the model history - SIDC faq

You need to insure it as an RA - no doubt.

If you do buy it, be sure to look into getting a ScoobyEcu
