Yes i did it. Went shooting friday and left the car 200 yards from where i was. noticed when i just about stopped the ground was a bit marshy and told myself that when i go not to hang around.
Anyway, end of day and got back into car and started to reverse out, went over two wheel tracks runnig from left to right and both front and rear wheels fell in at the same time.
Tried to rock it out but the car started sinking deeper.
I gave up and went to get out the car and the car had sunk so deep the door wouldn't open.
There i was in the middle of a field with a mobile phone with a flat battery.
Cut a long story i got hold of the game keeper and he pulled me out with a tractor.
No point to the story apart from "don't overestamate the 4x4" on a scoob
You may now take the pi$$

It's even funnier when we go off-roading to open playdays and see people who've decided to take their shogun/X5/Rangie out for a spin in the mud with standard tyres.
....the only spinning they'll do is the wheels as they try to get up the hill at the entrance gate
As paul says, can't beat Big 'n Knobbly tyres!

They don't have to be big, it's the knobbly bit that counts. Keep a set of gravel rally tyres in the shed, they're miles better than any "normal" winter tyre if it snows, and they'd have been far more effective in this situation too.
It's not simply a matter of not "overestimating the 4x4" on these cars, it's more a case of remembering that the amount of traction the 4WD system can create is secondary to the ability of the tyres to generate grip.

It's the tread pattern that's the most important thing. Modern "sports" tyres just clog when driven on loose/muddy surfaces - and that applies to the sort of covers normally fitted to X5's, Rangies and just about all the other "off-roaders" nowadays...
You're right though, the taller the sidewall the better in these conditions.

Pete, shut up.
UK and most Jap imports have the same transmition system.
The only Imprezas that would do better in that scenario are the ones fitted with DCCD, because you can lock the centre diff solid rather than having the slip asociated with a VC centre diff. Also on the TypeRA versions with DCCD you get an LSD at the front as well as the rear, so even more abilility to get out of a low traction situation.
In this respect the UK turbo is masively less capable than an STi5 RA.
