Can I get this upgrade for my car? Would it be a good idea? It's done 43k and has been very well looked after by the same Subaru dealer all it life. What are the costs and what gain will I get?

Your advice is much apprieciated.

Welcome newbie! Should cost you £1600 for the PPP, that will give you about 240-245 bhp! There are cheaper options that give more power via third parties. Do a search there's loads of info m8.

I got this car a couple of weeks ago and almost stole it off the previous owner (fool) so I am interested in keeping the car as valuable as possible. Would PPP not hold up the value, rather than non authorised/aftermarket conversions?

Not on a '97, no such thing until '99. Unichip, GEMS or MOTEC are the only remap options for a '97 AFAIK.

A PPP car as long as it's certified, will keep it's value more than a third party upgrade. If you trade/sell to a Subaru dealer when the time comes. But not all of what you paid!! So perhaps 3rd party might be cheaper in long run. Like all things in life, you pay's your money and take's your chance!!

P.S. I have a my/00 with full PPP conversion, engine, brakes, quickshift, suspension, wheels. And it feckin rocks!!

Question

Why ignore the "Unichip" bit..???

That's what i run, and it's worth about 30bhp. Despite the reliability claims, if you look after yours, you should have no problems. Definitely worth investigating before discounting completely...
