Basically if you have two items that have bluetooth e.g. a phone and a headset within a certain distance of one another (same room etc) the two items can communicate with each other without the need for wires.
In the car (or anywhere else for that matter) it illiminates the need to have wires etc trailing about etc to be pulled or snapped.
It is a great way for two items to communicate and as time goes by hopefully you will see more and more items possessing bluetooth.
Hope this helps

Be careful, the letter of the law states -
"Mobile telephone or other device is to be treated as hand-held if it is, or must be, held at some point during the course of making or receiving a call or performing any other interactive communication function"
Don't think these these kits fit into that category.
Only pukka, hands free kits are allowed.
Steve.

Put the phone in a cradle and there is no problem with ear pieces. You can press buttons on the phone etc - as long as you are not "holding it", so in a cradle or on the seat next to you is OK as long as you don't physically hold it.
Can still get done for dangerous driving etc, but you will be OK with the new law

According to the law - all phones must be in a holder/cradle, so just lying on the seat next to you is a no-no
I think the law says you cant touch the phone or hold it at all whilst calling. So sitting in a cradle or glove box while bluetoothed isn't an issue... as long as you dont make contact with it. My phone will go somewhere away from me - and therefore i wont be able to break the law
Correct me if im wrong....

Get a Sony Ericsson HBC-30 BlueTooth Car Kit, together with the HCE-16 stereo mute interface.
Phone in pocket, jump in car, turn on, full handsfree car kit available. Incoming call mutes stereo & comes out of speakers. Simple. Should do voice calling if you've got that on your phone.
3 wire install - +ve & -ve and ignition sensor. +v/-ve to battery through hole in bulkhead near steering column. Sensor to cigarette lighter socket +ve lead). Otherwise, its plug & go - wire for microphone, wire for remote controller and wire for stereo.
Works very well and is totally audible both ends even in a noisy MY99 Wagon

Guys I've found a supplier who can give us a quality Bluetooth headset and a universal cradle for the grand total of £79 plus P+P each. These cradles just clip onto the dash no need for drilling holes etc.
Headset normal cost £89.99
Cradle normal cost £16.99
A saving of £27.98 overall which I think is pretty good.
To save on any confusion could we all use this threadclicky
