#1
considering a p/x for my bugeye with a high mileage scoob classic. fsh with car, P reg, 89k. just really need info from classic high mileage owners as to wether they are problematic, or just as reliable as a young-un. any help would be of benefit to me.

Mines getting to be high mileage now-it's been no problem whatsoever and 100% reliable, I've done 40,000 miles in it this yr.
Main thing with a car approaching 90K is the upcoming cambelt/major service which I'm sure you know about anyway.

Going from a bugeye to a classic? Junot being judgemental - you've got your reasons. Just making sure I've read the post properly!!!
Depending on whether the car's got FSH (import) or FSSH (UK), you should be OK. Also depends on your definition of "high mileage"
My previous was an MY95 - sold it with 90K on the clock (just prior to the big service )
Usual wear and tear items - clutch, pads, discs, zorst (if not stainless steel), turbo (?).
I do know some people still running on original clutches (80-90K and still good!!)
Hope this helps

The BIG service is due at 90k.......about £600+ and if it is a 96 car then the header tanks usually need changing for a later one. As long as the car has been looked after and serviced then the milage shouldn't be a problem. You may get a few more wear+tear items that need replacing. My cars got more miles than that and runs sweet.

Dan, yes, going from a bugeye to a classic
always been a classic fan, only reason I got a bugeye is cos my wife is 5ft nowt and she couldnt adjust the classic seat high enough to see to drive, but the bugeye seats pump right up.
now though, she needs her own car, cos she drives 50-60 miles a day in the scoob, and it costs a small fortune in petrol each week, and thats without me using it either!!
so, plan is, sell bugeye, buy her a 3-4k small thing, get me an older scoob. sorted

My MY98 UK is up to 99k now, the only expensive things I've had to do apart from servicing and consumables was the heater matrix (£500), exhaust crosspipe and gaskets (£300), and replace the aircon rad (£500) after a stone hit it.
Have a look at http://www.arnesta.freeserve.co.uk/history.htm for more info.

my classic 95 scoobs got 103000miles on her now,had her about a year, apart from the 90 000 miles service which cost £700 including new brake calipers iv had no problems at all.she still runs sweet.
my m8 had 245000miles on his uk,same as mine and his was spot on he only had to replace a clutch.
high miles on these cars is not a problem as long as they have been looked after.

My MY96 (UK) has done 80ish000 miles now, and doesn't appear to be ailing too much. It's not even got a FSSH, as I do the servicing myself (have done for 2 years).
I don't find it too difficult - even the cambelt change was straight forward...
I don't consider 80k or 90k to be high milage though!! Ask me again in 40k miles!

I have a 94 WRX RA, 73k and sounds as sweets as a nut, just had the heater matrix replaced £152 & a comprehensive service + water temperature sensor replaced £277.
The car is an Import & is still like new underneath, all of the suspension links and other metalwork is still black like factory new & the underbody / arches etc is still the same colour as the bodywork. Never driven in rain until reaching this country, plus the interior is mint.
As long as they have been looked after, they are mechanically very strong.

95K on my 99 classic ex company car loads of receipts 4.5ks worth,on original clutch, had the big service just before I got it 7 months ago. Touch wood no problems at all, had oil service done at Subaru last month and didnt get any nasty surprises, 'FSSH and a respectfull owner and they should go forever',so I was told by a dealer before I bought mine. Went for a younger car with higher miles for me money and like I say she still purrs like a kitten (well a big loud kitten).

Hmmm v interesting
So, would you say its better to go for a newer car say MY98 with high mileage, sort of 100,000, as long as its in good nick and fsh etc, or to get a older car MY 95 with 70,000 and fsh etc.????

Depends what you want - the newer facelift models look nicer (IMHO)-I've gone from an MY95 to a 99....
If it's an import, you get the same seats as later UK models, but in general, it's a slight hike in output (about 7bhp) and stiffer suspension.
I love my MY99 - I've only had it a year, and at present, the only thing I can think of chopping it in for, is an STI8/9.....
But not yet - having too much fun!! (and the bank manager won't let me )

Check out the SIDC faq for the differences in year specs HERE

Gav 888 As has been said if you look at the facelift version I think you will prefer it.Out of interest, Ive read that the 99 ECU puts out slightly more bhp than the 00 version. The brakes and interier are upgraded on the face lift model which I think (forgive my lack of expertise) started on the 98 version. No doubt someone will correct me if Im wrong.

Nearly 100k in my MY98 and not missed a beat (apart from new short engine 2 yrs ago due to piston slap - free under warranty).
The thing with Imprezas is a fair few are owned by enthusiasts who are willing to spend what it takes to keep them running well. Mine has had more than the recommended oil changes, with good oil, all it's life, fully documented - I went from that and it turned out to be the right decision (I did look at a few with half the mileage and 1/10 of the history. They were dogs!).
Go for 98 on for better interior (buckets, white dials etc), and 99 on for 4-pots.
I guess now though, a few scoobies are owned by arseholes who don't treat them right, and aren't prepared to spend what it takes to keep them running (not really a lot, even at a main dealer), because you can pick them up for a lot less now.
There are plenty out there - don't buy one from a drug dealer
