Question

Right, Looking to buy a late classic scoob uk turbo some point earlish next year, but some posts concern me, suggesting high running costs.

The car will be my daily transport for plodding to and from work to and from work, as well as for having a bit of a grin when the mood takes me! Current monthly mileage is approx 1000 miles /month

Have checked out the insurance which isn't too bad at all really, just need an idea from current owners RE petrol and servicing costs (looking to go the specialist dealer route rather than main dealer).

Thanks in advance for any input.

If you are used to spending on 20/23 miles per gallon and high insurance ( depending upon age, experience and no claims, mods to the car etc)and dear bits + expensive eg nearly £400 for 45k service etc, scoob will be no more expensive. If not,Its gonna be an expensive bet for 1000 miles/month run to n fro work.

Hi Supersarbs. Currently have a MY00 Turbo 2000.
As for running costs. Well they ain't that bad although I do prepare for them where possible.

I currently use my car for the daily commute to and from work. And I don't use any Motorways. Currently doing roughly 800 - 950 Miles a month. And costs around £30 (Shell Optimax)a week to fill her up (That's averaging around 200 miles a week on a full tank).

As for servicing. Well, that could be a sore point. It's 7,500 miles or every 6 months with the classic Impreza. It's usually every year that the major service costs hit you. Well in between it's usually an oil and filters change. Typical example on the yearly service is around £400 - £500 but I only use a main dealer. For the 6 monthly oil and filter change it's cost me around £98 - £110. As for tyres, well it depends on make and manufacturer whether how many times you need to change them. Tyres can cost between £80 - £150 each. And if one needs changing it's best to get the others changed as well due to the 4 wheel drive. So again another major cost.
But for the plus point. It's one of the best practical cars to drive. And you will forgive the running costs with the amount of smiles it will give you. But once that stops you can always go the modding route. But again it's down to cost.

Hope that helps ?

Thanks Turbo Hot,

Had several performance cars in the past, but they have always been for fun as I commuted to London. Now I need the car for travelling to work as well, I need to work out what it'll cost me to see if I can justify the extra.

As already mentionned insurance is OK - looking about £650 / £700, from quotes I've been given.

The servicing cost you mention - is this from a main dealer or a specialist?

I'm not too great at working out MPG - how much is a tankful of fual and how many miles can you get out of it?

Any views?

Thanks again

jpor,

Missed your post while tapping out the other one.

Many thanks for the info - judging by what you mention there, the running costs are alot more reasonable than I expected petrol wise, and about what I expected RE the servicing (but would expect to spend less at a reputable specialist).

As already mentionned, my drive to and from work is a pootle in traffic up an a road @ 50 ish, I daresay alot of the time the car will be driven reasonably gently / off boost etc.

Cheers

Pete

Hi. I also have a MY00 Turbo. I do fewer miles - around 5000 per annum, but the car still needs to be seen every 6 months. Fortunately, my local main dealer is more than happy to tailor the services so my service costs tend to be between £135 & £175 every 6 months. I do 120 miles per week (thats half a tank of Optimax), costing between £23 & £25 on a weekly basis.
As long as you understand that the turbocharged Impreza has supercar-type performance & will therefore be more expensive to run than your "normal" sort of car, there aren't going to be any surprises. However, if you assume that because its Escort-sized it will cost the same to run, you will be in for a shock. There are plenty of whingers on this site who assume exactly this.
Best of luck.

No problem Supersarbs. I tend to take a couple of different routes to where I work. This can be as diverse as small country lanes to main B-Roads to a Dual-Carriage way, normally get stuck behind slow moving traffic. Although it is very tempting to put your foot down. From what you describe then it may not give you an advantage in MPG. It is also best to run the car on OPtimax or Super Unleaded to see the performace. But if you want to save money on Petrol costs. Then the car can be run on standard 95 Ron unleaded.

Scoobys run more smoothly on Optimax, & because they prefer the higher octane, they also run more economically on Optimax, therefore offsetting the higher cost of this fuel. Don't bother with 95 RON.

Cheers guys,

Will run on Otpimax / sul anyway - 95 ron seems a bit of a false economy on turbo car IMO.

Tim, have had several RS ford over the years and know for sure you don't get preformance for free (had a 4x4 cosworth which woulg have made running a helicopter seem cheap lol). Just wanted to check real running costs with owners such as yourselves rather than 'Running a Scoob will cost a fortune' comments I have heard.

Well, I think I had better start looking soon!

That is from specialist.I had Pug306 with small engine before I got scoob and found huge difference in the running cost even when I do half the milage compared to you a week. But I love it and no regrets.Sometimes it does come in my mind whether to buy a cheaper second car for work runs etc.But all the best with it and I can tell you that you will love the motor!
BTW watch these specialists.I nearly got ripped off big style on 45k sevice when I was told about two other faults with the car which didnt even exist! Bill would have been 800 not 400 had I gone ahead with their assessment.

Supersarbs. Good luck with your search. There are plenty to choose from. And plenty of different specced ones as well.

Was thinking about getting Scoobysport to do my servicing as they are not far from where I work. Any views on them people. To be honest though - the main dealer priced quoted seem reasonable, so may be tempted to use them.

Red face

Remember. That If you manage to get a late classic. And It still has warranty with Subaru. Then to keep it, you will need to take it to a dealers for servicing. This is especially if you buy the car from a main dealer.

They don't cost more to run than any other moderatly fast car.

My insurance was very similar to the quotes you got, 4 Goodyears have lasted over 15,000 miles with plenty of life left in them. Yearly servicing cost me about £350 at a main dealer and I'm expecting the big 90,000+cam belt to come in at a reasonable £700.

They are relatively cheap cars to buy and run IMHO-which is why I bought one.

I agree, 03 WRX and uk2000, both hell of a lot cheaper than previos V8 5 series BMW - Big service on BMW is equivalent to 3 years running cost for BMW. Plus alarm broke - £480 inc labour, new clutch and plate £650 inc vat.

uk2000 service £96 inc vat and only £450 for a cambelt and service.

Thumbs up

Thanks again everyone - costs outlined seem pretty reasonable to me.

Will have to keep an eye out for a good one now!

BTW - Cosworth mentionned previously cost £3500 in maintenance in the 6000 miles / 12 months I owned it (does not include insurance or petrol)according to my calculations thats about 58p/mile!!!! so as long as the new car does not cost anything like that I'll be a happy chap!!
