As some of you may know I have contacted Subaru directly with my concerns.

Here is the reply.

I have contacted our Technical department for more information regarging "piston slap". Whilst it was acknowledged as a concern and some vehicles received attention during their warranty period if the problem remained at all engine temperatures, it was never considered to be a manufacturing defect and the problem was purely a noise which disappeared when the engine became warm. I have also been advised that we are not aware of any instance of piston slap deteriorating into other, more serious problems. I hope this information is of asssistance to you.

My car is a MY97 UK turbo and is out of warranty. The noise does go away when warm.

I hope this helps everyone else with concerns.

Question

That's Odd

Why did they replace my engine with a brand new short engine. When the piston slap only occurred when cold?

Hi,

I wouldn't worry much if it does go away completely when warm... Piston slap in my97/98 tends to develop and then stabilise. Provided that it remains quiet when warm, then piston / bore clearences will be ok.

Cheers,

Alex

Goes away when cold?
So as long as you never use the car the piston slap is no problem

Thumbs down

Dougster, mine is a MY99 and it's just developed the dreaded slap, it does go away when it warms up . Taken it to the Subaru garage and got the normal fob off ....guess I've got to live with the sound of a Sunbeam for the first 5 minutes or so !

My 71kMile MY98 does this on No.3 piston (and has done for the 20k I've owned it), but only when cold.

Dissappears when warm.
