WHY MOAN ABOUT MPG
#1
Quite regularly I read posts about crap MPG and expensive maintainance costs for scoobs. Most people are reasonably intelligent suffice to say that if you run a high performance vehicle then it is obvious that you ain't gonna get 50 MPG and also when the service says you need a new part its gonna be a bit more expensive. I ran a horrendously thirsty STi Type R for 4 years as far as fuel was concerned but well worth every penny when I saw baseball clad goons in their Nova's and Corsa's dissapearing into the distance. Come on guy's an gal's we own a cracking peice of kit that will show most cars a clean pair of heels so if it's economy your after then sell the scoob and buy a Rover Diesel or Citroen Dianne, pipe, slippers, white scotty dog and get the wife or bird to have a blue rinse.

Because the MPG is often worse than it needs to be.
Especially true of older vehicles with things like dodgy lamda sensors, coolant temp sensors, fuel pressure problems and the like.
A well setup car should easily do 300miles on a tank (uk gearing), and still be as powerful as your budget allows, this isn't always the case.

Yeh! Think of it logically. If you get twenty to the gallon out of your Scoob, and decide to sell it because of the poor fuel consumption. The next car you buy, say does 26 mpg! unless it's a diesel or some crap slow jobby! then you've only made a saving of 6 mpg, minus the ammount you lost on the sale, minus the ammount you spend on the new car to bring it up to scratch, and at the end you could have run the Scoob for another 2 years on the money you've spent!!

P.S. I think!!!

Want better MPG, lighten the right.....(in the UK anyway)
Or better still get a 2nd hobby that does not use optimax etc like sailing....
Then, you need to drive to the sailing club, thus using optimax, bu44er.......

Most of us know what we're getting into when we buy these things, but every now and then you add it all up.
Did I really spend £4000 in petrol last year? Yes, I really did
Shocking, really, but worth every penny.

I agree.
1)Enjoyed my Imprezas a lot.
2)Worked out how much they were costing to run.
3)At change time, decided to go for something with 90-95% of the
performance and 50% of the running costs. (4x4 Skoda, 220bhp)
4)May well get a current model 03 on WRX PPP in a couple of years.
But ONLY if I can afford to run it properly.

I think most poeple moan as it's a bit of a shock...Especially when the official MPG fugures are not really true (especially classics) And the dealer in my case tells fibs (averages 30mpg round town...really!!).
Also Dealer servicing is a bit excessive on price too, as is some genuine parts (like brake pads). And the excuse "It's a performance car" doesn't hold water...as physically it's like any other standard saloon car, so why the extra cost? (obviously, I make exceptions for the gearbox/diff oils and more frequent oil changes). And cambelt servicing charges are way OTT - especially when its such a simple job to do on the scoob when comparing to many mundane non-performance cars!

I bought the car for its performance and i suppose to an extent its status. I dont care abt its mpg, interestingly tho its no worse on fuel than my old 1.4 corsa sport!!!!!

I've had my Scooby for 5 days, just filled it up for the second time this morning!
This week i've managed 16.74mpg! But i don't care, it's more than worth it after driving a Land Rover for 18 months which managed 24mpg on a good day and had zero performance.
I'm sure it'll improve as the novelty of the loud pedal starts to wear off!

Iwan, what excellent taste in cars you have. I have had my 03STi for about a month and have a Land rover for daily hack. I love them both even though I cannot work out which one drinks more fuel. Defender or Scoob - who knows? But my local petrol station is getting sick of the sight of me as it reckons I'm a forecourt squatter.
I couldnt give a crap about how much fuel they use. I get a lot of enjoyment from both and THAT is what is important.
