Guys n Gals, does anyone have any idea what could be the problem. If Im going down a straight road, and say, go over a grid, or bump in the road, I can feel my passenger rear try to step out! Only on that side can I feel it! Its not too bad cos its only a brief movement, but it does feel weird. I've not noticed it that much before, but when the road is wet, which is often the case lately, it feels worse! Also the suspension feels harsh on the rear now too! I had a 4 wheel align done a few months ago! Could this have caused a problem????
Cheers!

Broken spring or more likely a worn rear damper. I had a worn damper on my Lancia and this used to happen at 30 mph My Girlfriend had the same on her golf gti and I just replaced the rear damper and it's sorted. The way I found out for sure was to follow her down the road and watch the rear wheels as she went over a bump. Hers was that bad that the rear wheel was bouncing off of the road. Get somone to follow you and watch I have also suffered from a broken spring but didn't realise until I went to change it!

Paul

p.s both cases were passenger rear too

My P1 does it but not when going in a straight line and it only seems to happen on sunken grids. I have had two rear dampers and it still does it, dealer suspects faulty off the shelf dampers but I have my doubts that two could be faulty. Also my Yaris T-Sport does it and there is nothing wrong with the dampers on it. My only option is to have another rear damper fitted on the P1 but with my "local" dealer being a round trip of 100miles I am starting to "live" with it. Just for info the rear P1 struts are £275 each, classic ones should be much cheaper.

Can also be caused by bump steer.

DOH! WTF does bump steer do exactly. When I bought the car, the guy said it had had the ProDrive setup done! Is this the same thing??? The only thing is, I've only really noticed it in the past few weeks though!

Has the alignment been checked? perhaps the car is crabbing?

See if you can get someone to follow and see if the car runs straight and see what happens when it twitches?

Cheers! More info! Car was MOT'd about a month ago, and the All-Wheel align was done about 3 Months ago by a Scooby dealer. I recently had the wheels balanced, but the guy at the tyre place said to put the backs on the front and the front on the backs! So he did. Cant think of anything else in the area thats been done. All's I can say is, it sounds SO thrashy on the back end over bumps, like its not damping! but an MOT a month ago???? Hmmmmmmmm

could also be the wheel bearings worn out causing slight movement of the rear wheels jack the car up and see if theres any play in the wheel.

Bumpsteer allows the steering direction of each wheel to change independently as the wheel moves up amd down on the suspension. On the standard Scoob it points outwards as the wheel goes up in relation to the car. As the nose of the car dips, both wheels will splay outwards. This will cause the tyres to wear on the inside edges and also cause understeer during cornering. My car used to dart around like yours too before I had the bumpsteer removed. Now it is absolutely stable,no understeer, and the front tyres wear evenly.

The bumpsteer can be removed by Powerstation in Gloucester as well as a totally accurate suspension set up. They shim the steering rack to achieve correct steering geometry.
