Looks like it my be time for a financial reality check. My scoob is hoovering up all my money.

What are the alternatives to a scoob that have reasonable performace but wont munch as much cash.

I need to reduce insurance, service cost/interval and fuel costs.

I was thinking of a CTR? Anyone else moved from scoob to CTR, how do costs compare.

I'd have about 12k to spend. (based on getting 12k for my scoob).

Ive has a quote for a CTR thru tesco - £900 compared to £1200 for the scoob, so theres a saving to be had there for a start.

not to everyone's taste, but I changed to a Porsche 944 Turbo. Insurance £300 cheaper, servicing about half the price, petrol about the same, depreciation - what's that? Oh and it's quicker and more fun too.

Go for a VW Golf GT PDi 150, get it chipped at AMD to produce 190bhp and it will still give you 55mpg and the same torque as your Scoob.
You *may* be able to pick one up for £12k ish

yes but you wont get a GT PDi 150 for 12k, not a sniff, more like a 130 if you are lucky

That's true, but the extra £3k you will be saving in fuel when switching to the Golf should be able to buy something like this:

I went to a Octavia vRS. I would say you'd get a good one for £12k.

A little bit slower (not too much) and a damn sight cheaper

I been to test drive an ex demonstrator octavia RS today. Realy nice car inside. Went pretty well too - fet faster than the claimed 8 sec to 60.

Sales dud said serviceing we cheap too. I'm feeling pretty keen on it to be honest.

I dont like to golfs that much to be honest. Overpriced for what they are. Octavia comes fully loaded in RS form. Insurance is £800 too.

Any more octavia owners out there? DO they rattle?

Mine has got a slight rattle from the fuse box area. Next dry day I'll find and fix it. I've got a feeling it's from when my alarm was fitted.

My vRS picked up its first rattle recently - its on 30k now and I marshal on rallies so its seen a few bumpy roads. Not annoying and only occasionally noticable.

I did the sti thing for a year and aquired 4 new tyres, clutch, brakes, and personal fuel tanker

I have a 2004 CTR on order with an internet company for (all in) £15327 new in pearlesent black. At the moment the current mark 1 CTR's two years old are going for £11-12000 private. The scooby might be faster but it also depreciates much, much faster. This was the clincher for me. If you check the parkers guide CTR's have the best 3 year residuals of any non luxury car. Sorry guys,can't be doing with people who buy a real performance car and moan all the time about running costs, seems to me a sraight forward equation more peformance = more cost end of story. Why not go for a Diesel Rover 200, pipe, slippers, pension book, they will probably throw them in as extra's.

Mine is costing me a shedload to do 25k a year in! I've also had to have 2 sets of tyres since i've had it (bought new wheels) and a new clutch. Dial in a 60k + cambelt service, and 2 normal services and the cost is excrutiating... I DON'T CARE THOUGH!! Can't think of any other car I'd want which I can afford to purchase. Mine is still grins-galor nearly a year on!

I was expecting it to cost laods just perhaps not as much!! Oh well shouldn't need a clutch for at least another 30k

Andy, a man after my own heart, I have just got rid of a Type R STi import after owning it for 4 years and it cost me a bomb but as you quite rightly say the grin factor never left me, I even blew the engine and had a rebuild but just couldn't wait to get back on the road. I have just taken delivery of an STi 8 Type UK and seem to be the only one in the universe that has not had a Prodrive (sorry ppp) conversion but am delighted with it so far. Can't wait to run it in. Another vote for either the Octavia or Fabia RS.

I test drove them both recently and there isn't anything that compares for perfomance for your money. The Fabia is the cheaper running option if you don't need the space.

Jabbasport have some interesting upgrades for little money.

For £12k you could have a nearly new Octavia or new Fabia. The Fabia delivery dates are now back to March I believe so you may have to wait.

Sorry, but I fecking hate clito's. Fecking french plastic sh1te. Disgusting interior - looks like it was made in playschool. Goes for most renaults to be honest.

As for moaning about the costs - scoob was a great idea a year ago when I has spare cash, now getting married and a change of job means less spare income. Each month I pay...

£120 insurance

Plus I do 16k miles a year, so Ive had £450 for a 30k mile service, andother £150 for a 'minor' service, and £300 fro 4 toyos.

I love the car, and will probably go back to one in the future, but I just cant keep throwing cash at it in this way.

why not go the lux route, ie A4 or 3 series.

I considered getting a 2.8 Quattro A4, what put me off is its needs wheel and a body kit, thats an extra grand!!!!

Sure you save on £ per mile....
But don't you have to service them more often and don't they cost more to service?

Bought a Mitsubishi space star for the wife, had the option of the petrol or diesel version, salesman was pushing me to buy diesel (£500 more)
I was tempted until I found out servicing for the diesel was every 7500 miles!!! The petrol was every 25000....

the sad reality is that you're going to be disapointed in anything performance and handling wise after the scoob, it's horses for courses as someone else said. I do 35-40 k a year so my WRX PPP will cost me a lot more than a diesel equivalent so I may end up giving the scooby to my wife and getting a diesel for the work miles in a year or so but the truth is you have to pay to play!

I sold my motorbike and don't **** it up against the wall three times a week so I justify it to myself that way but I guess the inevitable diesel economy will get the better of me again (last two cars were Audi 2.5 TDI 180 Quattro Sport's which felt pretty quick and were definately very well put together with all the goodies - tip, bose, leather, dual climate, etc, etc)
Truth is I enjoy driving the scoob much more than anything else on shortish runs but on longer runs it a bit crappy in comparison to the Audi's

I get very bored by people (BlackScoobyWRX) making comments about cars they have little idea about, as do the car suggestions that actually annoy them !

I also was a happy Subaru driver (had 6) and it got very expensive. The last engine also blew under warranty.

1. Choice of 4x4 if you want (I did).
2. Very well kitted and built
3. Very cheap to run. My 4x4 30k service £59. Mpg 25 worst, 37 best
4. 220bhp (safely AND reliably) for £475
5. Buy at 1yr old and the depreciation as good as Classic Impreza.
6. No image. So what! - low theft,no plod or road 'hassle'.

I worked out the running costs over the last 12,000 miles against my last Impreza (ignoring the engine issue) - the Octavia was 50% cheaper to run but still a petrol and still with 220bhp...

ps 150PD's don't sell for £12k unless huge miles/
I prefer my Octavia to both my A4 Quattros

Mine isn't a UK Impreza (its an import STi running at over 300BHP so yeah its quicker than any old/heavy/dated 944 or cough cough Skoda cough cough)
