I sold a BMW 528 and a TVR Chimaera to get a more economical form of transport. Bought a brand new WRX PPP and the TCO is half that of owning the other two!!

I've been laughing all the way to the bank since July I love the car, but if you don't, just get something else and stop boring people who do love scoobies. That's why we're on this forum after all isn't it??

I don't want to start this damn Sport "thing" off again but have you considered trying one ??

Yes i know the BHP is just not there but you still can enjoy the Subaru experiance as i am, i drive about 9k a year, work is 10 mins away........ i have driven Turbos on rare occasions and they are fantastic !!! but as the old saying goes.........

My Sport does me good yes a little under powered i agree but a great drive also ...... just got to wind the revs right up!!
I did look at the possibilites of a turbo but with such a short journey to and from work the engine is never really warming up and i would simply not get the full use for the cost of running it.

Enjoying the £342 it costs to insure and the £20 a week in the tank...... instead of probably £800 a year and £30+ a week.
On top of that tyres clutch etc etc and more tyres
Maybe in a year or 2 i shall look at changing and then who knows.

Saying that i've just had new tyres.... mind you that is the factory settings for you....

Impreza Turbo's cost alot to insure, maintain and to have fun in. Everyone knows this so why complain. It's a performance car with superb handling and on road ability that can upset alot of cars costing alot more.

I did thing's in the rain today that some cars can't do in the dry. (Q PC mob complaining about my driving )

A simple equation for you lot who complain. Scoob=Great finacial burden. Get over it. If you can't afford it don't complain. You shouldn't have bought it in the first place. I can't afford a lot of cars but I dont complain about it. I wouldn't buy a car that costs alot to maintain and then complain about it. I can just about afford the Scoob. I don't complain, I enjoy it because I know it wont last forever.

I enjoyed my Imprezas (and Legacies) but they cost a lot to run.
If you can't afford to run them, buy soemthing else that is cheaper to run, and while you are at make sure it's 'nearly' as good to drive.

I replaced my MY99 Turbo with a Civic Type R in March 2002. It's a damn sight cheaper to run - so far (19,000 miles) I've only needed one service, which was free (because the car was delayed by about 4hrs on delivery), one pair of front tyres (£250 but I'm going to use PZeros next which is under £200 the pair - next pair needed shortly, anyway) and got about 30mpg. It's very cheap to run compared to a classic Impreza. Depreciation also seems to be kept well in check so far.

I agree, I agree, I agreeee. IF you want a car thats fast, you will leak money just as quick. Of course there is an alternative. Keep the scoob with a limited mileage policy, never drive it on boost and stick to the speed limits (as I am sure we all do). Hey, why not bring the rev limiter down to about 2200 rpm?

I recently bought an 03 STi and yes, the only thing it doesnt like overtaking is petrol stations (to fill up with the most expensive gas on the forecourt). I am quite lucky as my baby is a second car only used as a toy but I did drive it in the way described above, yesterday. It did return v. good MPG on the motorway (60mph in 6th). But I didnt buy it for that, and yes it is costly (with more bills to come in the future I expect) But then I knew that when I paid the deposit so I aint gonna complain about it.

Gas guzzling - yes. Money scoffing - probably. But stupid piece of ****? NEVER

It amazes me how many **** heads are on this board. I dont remember reading anywhere in nuclear_pond's original post that he was slagging off Imprezas for how much they cost, and he hadn't expected them too etc etc, like so many of you have commented.

He originally asked for your opinions on reasonable performance cars that cost reasonable amounts to run, as he needs to save some cash. Why cant some of you people read the question and answer it?

nuclear_pond - I was in the same situation as you and went for a diesel Golf. It was excellent in terms of costing a lot less to insure, service, fuel etc. But it was so dull to drive I sold it. I now have a 323 and it is a good compromise IMO. It is pretty cheap to service - about every 15k - I get 35 mpg - mix of motorway and town. Hope this helps.

944 Turbos are good fun I had one but blew the **** out of it. 1986 model and couldnt be bothered repairing it.

Octavia is a cracking car. Im in Disco's Skoda 1.8 Turbo at the moment and done 3000 miles in it so far. Very good car with the right suspension and mapped up correctly. And holding 90mph on the motorway all day long still returns 33-35mpg on it. What more do you want?!

If you want to save more money, buy a cheaper Skoda for £7k and mod it slightly and you well get more performance for less money. And still VAG reliablilty.

The subject was a joke. I love my scoob and will be sad to see it go, but probably will have another on in the future. My circumstances have changed and I want to cut costs. I worked it out today while I should have been working, and riunning costs this year have been just under 9k. Its a lot. I never expected it to be cheap tho

I'm watching this thread with interest; I'm looking for another car to run for, and suspect that the figure i get to spend will be in the region of £10-12K.

I love my scoob, costs and all, but the 40p per mile that HMG lets people claim for business miles before extorting more tax is ridiculous; that's before even thinking about what happens after 10K miles in a year. I'm not subsidising the company I work for for much longer by running my scoob for work for more than i get paid for it (much as i'd like to as i love driving it).

I'll have to see if i can do something like pull a fast one to get my boss to agree to letting me have a scoob for a company car!

MAYBE I AM missing a point. I bought an o3 new wrx in April and have now done 13000 miles. In that time i have driven it hard, and its cost me £200 in the two services and the tyres are ok. I drove a company vectra gsi before and that ate tyres every 7000 miles on the front and servicing was more. Before that I had an Audi and that was bloody expensive to service

Many owners on here complain about costs and include modifications to the list. The scoob has been more than i hoped it would ne. Its a performance car, and yes its thirsty (average 22 miles per gallon), insurance is £540 fully protecterd with direct line and its fun fun and fun. I knew it was no metro and it would cost money to run. Dont knock a great car guys but if the costs are prohibitive id go for a sport as if reliabilty is anything to go by the scoob has a lot going for it.

Having spent many years in company cars sat on hard shoulders waiting for rcevery yhe sccoby has been ultra reliable. I hope to get a prodrive but that wont be part of the running costs thats just me indulging!
