1.6 GL... any good?

as im only just 19 insurance on any other scoob will be ridiculous so im considering 1 of these and making it look like a turbo... would it be worth it especially as insurance is still quite high and i could get a quicker car for the same money/insurance? what do you guys think?

I think you should come back to Subaru when you are 25 - no disrespect to 'other' Subarus but they aren't in the running when placed alongside the competition. Its only the Impreza Turbo that wipes the floor with its peers.

i doubt you fell into a cossy or e type when you passed ?? your test...
i started in some right old bangers on my way to subarudom
no doubt i will go through many other makes too...
Subaru has been around for some time, and its vehicles were mainly
bought by agricultural types,, it was only when a certain
individual started to gain popularity in the rallying scene that
the marque really took off.....
given that thew marque is suffering some dealer identity issues at the moment its nice to see that the car still has the kudos even in its lesser forms

Personally I'd get something that handles reaaly well, a hoot to chuck around. Going fast in a straight line is not all its cracked up to be - the most boring place to be in a scoob is a motorway, clear or unclear.
10 years ago (**** its 13 years ago) when I was your age the weapon of choice was a mini 1000. Group 1 insurance and go kart handling.
These days if you can get your hands on a 106 rallye you'll be laughing. They look good, handle fantastic, go well and cheap insurance too.

Yeah no point doing it up to look like a wrx, cause when you tell the insurance company they will probably quote you a price for a wrx cause it will look just as inviting to the thieves who wont know till they drive off. sort of reminds you of the days when the escort cossie came out and all the muppets made their 1.4's look like em.

They are only a group 10 but because I live in N'orn I'ron my insurance for my 1.6gl is still dear compared to insuring it if I lived in the mainland. They are cheaper to feed as well, but the 88bhp is a bit of a bummer.

i'm a 1.6 owner and got mine when i was 19.
the reason i went down this road was due to getting a job that meant i had to travel about an hours drive to get to work.
so i was looking for a bigger car, i'd always loved scoobies so i just went down that road.
two years on and i still love what i drive. yes it's not a turbo and it's not even a 2ltr but it is a reliable car with a fair amount of go...when it gets going, it's all the transmission that slows it down from go, but once moving it's ok.
wanna know what car it's neck and neck with....fiesta xr2i
handling wise, it's the same as a 2ltr sport which i dont belive is bad.
i stil do get the urge for a smaller more chuckable car but then i always pull back cos i dont wanna be cramped in some saxo for up to 2 hours everyday. i guess i could have got a mondingo or something for the space but there just boring.

i would agree that (apart from the nice leggys)the subaru range is poor apart from the turbos
theres no need for a 1.6 or sumthing whn u could have say a td vectra with sum irmsher bodybits looks much better and will be a lot easier on the wallet
a lot of people say my old veccy td still looked better then my scooby, i would say it looked a lot more stylish, but the scooby looks fooken harder lol

When I was 20 I had an old shape Honda CRX, 0-60 about 7.5 secs and handled like the proverbial go kart, great fun and IMO still looks great today. If they hadn't brought out the new shape with the fold down roof I'd have definitely bought another one!

I don't want to put you off, as I have a 1.8 impreza, which I like, but I think there's better & quicker stuff to be had for the money. The 1.8 certainly ain't quick, & it isn't all that hot on the motorway either, but they're well built (imo), & have good handling. That's group 11, by the way. I would imagine the Sport would be a fair bit better, but then that'd be group 12 or 13, I think, which was why I didn't get one.
You can make 'em look good, but you won't have the power to match it. Might be better with summat else, to be honest - a civic perhaps, or something a bit cheaper to run. It's a long time to wait though (which was why I got mine), as I'm still only 22.
Have a think about it...

i've got a 1.8GL wagon too, and have realised that it will reach the end of the speedo (135mph downhill on M74 so have no probs with pace.
thing is to be sure the car can handle at high speeds since it takes so long to get there! I've put on new suspension, front and rear strut braces, done some of the bushes, and new brakes. Oh, and was gifted a set of 16" scooby alloys too!! Have fitted an induction kit, and am about to attach a mini-induction scoop on the bonnet to improve air-flow. Done full exhaust job too - tuned manifold, and loud back box.
so when it eventually gets up the pace, make sure you can stay there!

MY00 Classic Turbo was booked in for a servie and they gave me a 2.0 Sport (Brand New) as a loan car, Have to say what a let down, got my **** handed to me by a crappy old Golf GTi with more rust than body work and a Nissan Bluebird fu**in Taxi....

I think the point that you could get a (Better) car for the money is true, but if you want to buy into the impreza cluture then there is no reason to be put off.
Don't let the turbo snobs put you off
I am 23 and I drive a 2ltr sport and believe me it is fast enough for what I want, OK you will not win a traffic light grand prix against much, but round the bends the handling is not at all off a turbo, upgrade the wheels and maybe put Eibachs on it, and you are 75% the way towards a turbo.

Someone else was asking pretty much the same thing about 2 weeks ago, I'm 19 with an Impreza 1.6GL, so I answered him here.
You're right you could get a faster and cheaper car for the money, but it is nice to be part of the Impreza crowd, and it's great fun telling people what you drive . Had mine since 17, so that's wearing off a little
Some of the people that are slagging the 1.6 above are comparing it to a WRX, that's just ridiculous and not very helpful at all. What alternatives have you been thinking of? Obviously, that's what you need to compare to.
I've driven a 2.0 and that's much quicker, the handling is the same though, and I'd imagine that's going to be better than the alternatives you're considering.
My car was in the family already and passed on to me, so I didn't choose it as such. Had I been in a position to do so, I'd go for a 2.0 or maybe 1.8 if funds allowed (try some insurance quotes), others I thought of were:
Saxo VTR - quicker, cheaper to run, but look at people that drive them, and have you seen a crashed one
Triumph Dolomite Sprint - the dream went...

Me: "Race me".
Insurance quotes actually came out cheaper than the Impreza for me when I was 17 but I haven't checked recently, however it would break down and bits fall off, also I doubt the MPG is great, so probably not terribly sensible.
Anyway I love mine. Can fit the drum kit in the boot and get all my clobber to and from uni, don't forget the whole 'point' of the WRX is it's a sensible car that goes fast - if you take the power away, you're left with the sensible car. If that meets your needs, and you can afford the extra costs, go for it.

Haxzer - I hardly think you'd be impressed with a sport, if you normally drove a UK turbo....just as I wasn't impressed when the garage gave me a Yaris
The point is, they're nice cars. Not as quick as a turbo OK, but that ain't really the point. If we could all afford to, or wanted to buy a turbo, I'm sure we would. But I can't.
In my view, buying a GL is slightly irrational, as there's quicker stuff to be had for the money, but nothing else is 4 wheel drive (which we all need, of course), or looks as good. More thirsty than say, a 1.8 civic (if one exists, but who cares. It isn't budget motoring we're after, or we'd all have a Panda 4x4, which I hear are (were) quite good....relatively speaking....
That said, it's your choice, but don't be put off. GLs are quite cheap at the moment as well......

buy a sport if u want, its will probably work out better then buying a 1.6gl ****box and spending loads of money on the bodykit and then loads of money on the extra insurance becuase your company now thinks its gonna get nicked everytime u park it up?
