You could definitely get a good one for 12k - low mileage year 2000 UK model etc.

Servicing not too bad. £110 7.5k, £150 15k, £110 22.5k, £350 30k etc. Cambelt is around £200 fitted I think.

Reliability excellent on standard cars. In seven years of ownership (MY97 and MY00)I've needed a replacement radio cassette and a lambda sensor

They drink petrol

Cheers,

Ian.

Hi Guys,

I currently own a Civic Type R and have been looking @ a Scooby mmmmmmmm!
Right I need your help. Could I get a nice scoob for 12k? How reliable are they when in std form? How much do they cost to run? ive heard really bad things like £600 services! how much is the average service? 30k 37.5k 45k 52.5k? How long do tyres & pads last?
Any general things I should look out for?

Cheers Guys

12k....Hmmmmm Sti Type R v-Ltd, at the bottom end of its market maybe?? Failing that a nice RB5!.
My experiences with Scoobs stretch to a McRAE 38k, needed a clutch and cam belt £600, Power stearing pump £200 be prepared for some costs but then again what can you buy for that price that compares in performance>?

Check for a juddery clutch (only fix is new clutch and flywheel) and failing synchomesh (first symptoms are crunching on quick, high rev gearchanges)

Those are the two most likely expensive problems

But you wont care when you've driven it....

Im only 21 so insurance is the big issue here! I drive a modded Type R at the mo so the Std 98-00 Turbo is about my limit i would say

forget the ppp and uk sh1te.
If you want power + peformance go for the Jap stuff.
Dont go for a watered down impreza, you will only regret it and look a fool.

Oh wonderful comments hixton
You will find that some "jap stuff" actually has less power than the uk cars
Also, a ppp'd scoob is more than a match for most jap cars, as even though quoted 276bhp, that is on 100 ron fuel, the early wrx's are not a match either, less horsepower to start with and its pretty much proven that a uk car can be tuned better than its jap counter parts (just look at the likes of Rich Wild and his little beast )

There are only the jap models 22b, sti type r and ra that are worth the scooby badge.
If its a performance car you want then the above are perfect, forget the watered down UK versions, they are poo

Would agree with you Hixton to some extent that the standard Uk Impreza is not as powerful as a jap version but the Uk car for the prices you pay and insurance you spend is still a fabulous piece of kit. I own a Sti Type r and also owned a Uk 95 and a Jap WRX 95 the WRX was still a lot of car compared with the STi. What do you drive Hixton

No doubt hixton also excludes the likes of the spec c which in itself is probably the fastest production impreza out there

I think we are missing the point here guys.

Matt is only 21 so insuring an import or type r will probably be out of the question.
A decent uk turbo would be a good start, and when cash and insurance allow, then there are plenty of ways of increasing power

As far as servicing goes, intermitent services will cost around £110, but some of the biggies ie 60k could set you back £600+

Good hunting

So when are the big services? When does the cambelt need changing? How long do the clutches last?

Thanks matt

Matt - I was in the same boat...I thought about getting a Scoob for 5 years, kept putting it off, made excuses. Just do it!!
Running costs are relative - my Scoob drinks fuel compared to my old MKIV GT Diesel, but do your homework, work out exactly how much running/services cost locally and you'll be fine (my VW was more expensive to service...).
Just remember you aren't invincible in the wet...managed to get the back end out on mine at two days old

Oh and everyone notices the car - which is either a good thing, or a bad thing (I'm turning into Mr Paranoid...must get some better security)

When I was looking for my scooby, I considered the uk model to be the one to go for. Then I drove an R.A. and bought it.... if you are going to buy a uk, don't drive the others and you'll be satisfied, because they are great cars. but if you want the best go for it and hang the expense(OH no not another visa statement)
And, whats so bad about getting the back to come out, thats half of the fun!

Matt

My car is an MY98 uk turbo.
Services are every 7k or 6 months {which ever comes first)
The biggest services are the 30k,45k{cambelt},60k and the new mortgage 90k
I bought mine over a year ago with 38k on the clock but it was ahead on the service schedule so had already had the 45k service.
It had its 60k service earlier this year which will set you back about £500-£600.
Tyres last some people on here as little as 8 months with hard driving and the odd track day(more track days even less).
But i would say the average would be around 2 years based on 12k per year if your a bit more careful with your right foot

Your worst problem is going to be the cars drinking habits
200-230 miles per week is going to set you back about £36
With a bit of a play at weekends you could be looking at £200 a month

But at the end of the day, who cares......

You will be grinning so much from ear to ear, you certainly wont

Good luck

Greg
