Changing my MY99 4dr for MY02 5dr
#1
Ok, I've decided I need the practicality of a wagon! (MTB'ing, general outdoor sports type stuff).
Am considering trading in my Blue Mica MY99 4dr 40k miles for a nice looking MY02 WRX 5dr 30k miles with Morettes. With a trade-in its gonna cost me £3.5k which I think is pretty good, or am I mad ???
If i do this I will consider PPP'ing him up.....
Hmmmm, decisions decisions........

Come on you bug eye owners help me out a bit here! I can't quite afford an MY03. My dealers' offered me an MY03 5dr demonstrator (200 miles) for £19k minus £10.5 trade-in for the classic, but I can't quite stretch that far....

I've owned a 99MY Classic (Tek2) and did look and drive the WRX, but never owned one. I thought it was very expensive (I was looking at £17-18k against £8-9k for mine) for what you got in the change, and started thinking laterally.
It was either keep the 99MY while prices kept tumbling, and run it into the ground (Imprezas are not cheap after 60k in my experience), or do something else.
I bought a Skoda in the end and had it remapped to 220bhp. It's better built than the pre 03 WRX with better quality materials and solidity and plenty of standard kit. I've owned 2 A4 quattros and its more fun to drive. Its about 0.5-0.7 slower to 60 than a (std) WRX but much more flexible in 4th and 5th.
Your choice is FWD vRS or 4x4 (but you'll want to lower the ride height and improve the brakes) for typically £11k for a 2002 4x4 estate.
Best car decision I've ever made - stealthy, cheap to run - £60 for my 30k service!, never less than 25mpg usually 32+, and enormous boot.
Might as well have a look ?

I did exactly what you are talking about - changing from 4dr turbo to 5 dr bugeye. Wondered at first if I had done the right thing but now have no regrets. Actually I now like the look of the bugeye - seems to grow on you and definately prefer it to the newer blobeye which looks really weird.

OK, thanks for your replies!
4x4 Interesting reply can't believe you suggested I swapped Scooby for a Skoda Thought you were taking the pee at first, I see what you mean about thinking laterally! 220bhp The ultimate in Stealth . Its mad how good Skodas are these daze.
WRXBugeye & 4x4 well thats it now I've bought it!!! I took the Red bug for a spin this morning. It felt so slow compared to the classic, but much smoother. Better handling, better brakes. I liked the more refined feel. I got back and salesman Steve knew I'd be disappointed with the lack of oomph, so as predicted he suggested getting the Performance Pack.
To whet my appetite he gave me the keys to their demonstrator MY03 WRX PPP and I just loved it!! What a blast!! Just chewed up tarmac and roared past everything!!!!! I'm not expecting quite the same from the PPP'd bugeye, but hopefully not far off!? (The Sti PPP must be just awesome!!)
Anyway I got the following stuff:
MY02 Red Mica WRX 5dr, plus
PPP
Quickshift
Respray bonnet + minor paint repairs
Fit Minidisc stereo (already paid for)
30k service
2 new tyres
6 months tax
Total outlay £5.5k + Classic. I thought £10.5k on the Classic was generous ??
Anyway probably could have got a better deal if I was a bit more scary, but what the hell, I'm happy!

Reassuring to hear you are happy with making the move, as I'm just thing of doing the same thing! MY97 wagon -> Bugeye WRX wagon. It's the refinement I'm looking for, so that's good to hear.

Think you got a decent deal there mate. I have a MY 02 bugeye wagon in WR blue with Morettes, and the handling and brakes are a cut above the classic IMHO.
OK, so the performance isn't there relative to the classic, but it's faster than most things on the road. And the PPP helps it leap further up the food chain, if you see what I mean.....
I'm into MTBing, and with two dogs as well, it's the only 'sensible' Scooby choice

There's a lot to be said for a bit less raw performance for some extra refinement if you are doing a few miles. Either that or we are getting old!
(PS the 'Tavia estate boot is a LOT bigger than the WRX wagon's if space does matter and you still need 4x4,turbo and 220+bhp)

Wilster, I had a my/02 bugeye from new, now have a my/00 PPP, just no comparison. The classic would **** all over the bug! but the bug was far more comfortable. The wife found the bug easier to drive, down to the quickshift on the classic I think, the bug was a far less frantic car day to day, but I wouldn't swap back for a gold pig. Yes I know the bug didn't have the PPP, but the classic is what I expected a scoob to go like when I bought the bug, but it just didn't feel fast.

I agree about this 'feeling fast' - the first WRX I drove was while I had a chipped V6 TDI Quattro A4 and it honestly did not feel a huge amount slower.
That's the crux really WRX+PPP for refinement and speed or Classic for raw energy.

Flat 4x4 well put - in a nut-shell.
Harry Boy, I'm keeping away from even test-driving the Sti for now 'cos I'll end up remortgaging Maybe in another 2-3 yrs I'll join you!! (Assuming you've got one ? ).
Question is - do I get them to fit new Potenzas (as negotiated), or scrap the two 'good' tyres, spend another 200 quid (o'h wot the hell) and get new F1's all round......?

Hi Wilster - not got one mate, 'only' a MY02 wagon. Trying to persuade my wife to let me have a PPP STI 8, or even defect over to the dark side (at least until I get it out of my system.....).

Keep thinking the same.
Spend a humble sum to mod my MY98 wagon, or pay about three times that to upgrade to bugeye PPP. . . . .
Can help thinking that I'd miss the punch of the wagon I've got, but not the noise
Friend has a standard 01 wagon, and on the French motorway last easter there was absolutely nothing between them upto 125mph, then he had to stop playing as all sorts of bits started to rattle and whistle very loudly while I just sailed on by. . .
