Question

A mate is undertaking a MAJOR restoration project
Restoration project Go to home page for 'Before Shot' - Scary

Look at this page and the amount of work he is doing for this 'Classic'. Will anyone ever do that for a Scooby????

Mick

Makes me feel very guilty about chopping up a MK1 to use the bits for a Westfield!

Sorry to thread-crash (and this may be a 'SIAL') but check this out

It's a Merc C126 500 SEC that's been converted into a Mercedes-McLaren SLR. A work of true genius !

dosenöffner- The finished car is not a real one, it's about as far away as an Impreza is to a Daewoo (which isn't that far)

The site shows a genuine car, wider, longer, different wheels, etc.

The great thing about the MK1 is that you can get all the body parts new and cheap, mechanicals are a peice of pxss (No computers, maf sensors, ecu's etc), tools needed for restoration, angle grinder, 12 & 13mm spanners, Mig welder and lots of plate metal, bog (or body filler), spray gun. I did this when I was 18 with 2 mates. Complete 2 door shed to show winning MK1 rwd Cosworth in 18 months. I don't know why he's fagging around mending that tea bag of a shell though, you can buy new ones for less than the amount of mig wire he'll spend. Try to start welding a rusty old scooby though and you,ll end up with a smoldering pile of molten metal in minutes. They made mk1's out of pretty thick metal.

Lets be honest - who is ever going to see the two side by side.

Wonder what it costs ?

He's probably spent so far the same as a 45,000 service on a Scooby. However that doesn't take into account his time, knowledge and vast amounts of patience. When taking a MK1 apart, the most common expresion is "Not more fxxking rot".
Good luck to him, its a passion as we all know.

If you're talking about the Merc SLR copy, he wants 250,000 euros for it !

AK47- What I would say is if everything he has done is genuine then it's a fantastic achievement but you can't expect it to fool enthusiasts.

That said, I don't think his intention was to fool anybody but to show how talented he is.

I've seen good Fiero copies of a Ferrari but you just know they aren't genuine.

When you see an SLR next to this copy you will immediately know which is which, there is no comparison.

Excellent achievement nonetheless.

Have a look on the site, half way down the page is the finished copy and a bit further down is the genuine thing.

I did a similar restoration once to an E12 M535i. It was worth it since it is a rare car and was very nice to drive afterwards. Lot of work though and I wish him all the luck. It certainly makes you appreciate owning the car afterwards.
