I'm quite a newbie to Imprezas so not sure waht to look for over the obvious for all cars when looking to buy.

I'm after a Wagon for the family and have a few in mind and my budget is £6,000. I haven't seen any of them in the flesh but just to start with which would you go for if in my position?

Mainly do you feel high mileage is an issue? If I buy a low miler 97-99 could it develope piston slap and cost a fortune if not under warranty? My insurer demands a tracker and my renewal is Feb 04 so want to stay with them to get another NCB under my belt so hence another £500? ish on top of purchase if not fitted.

1. MY99 T DGM High miles (128K) FSH (not all Sub but cam done etc) no tracker. Asking 6500 but would try to knock down to 6 due to no tracker. Private

2. MY98 R Silver 35K FSSH Not sure on tracker. Price is 9K so 6K cash and barter rest on finance. Trade so 12 month warranty (this one could develope piston slap?).

Also interested in a third which I very much like but unfortunately its miles away and I'm struggling to sort travel arrangements. Also a board members car so not right to ask other members to pick holes at it.

Any opinion appreciated.

Have you considered an import?

i have a wagon wrx import - red L-reg '93, bought with 42k miles 16 months ago £7k

prices have dropped alot since then.
done 58k miles in it and modified it quite alot. the car has been great.

picked up a 95 M reg wrx for a friend the other day - black 40k fo £5450!!!

there are bargains out there.

I would rather a UK to be honest and a late 97+ facelfit car.

Any thoughts at all on the above? Seems if well looked after Scooby's can cope with big miles?

Ed

i have a UK MY98 4dr

bought it just over 2 years ago for £13.5k from a dealer.

at the time i got it there was a choice of two:

MY99, 36K on clock - £15999
MY98, 30K on clock - £15999

Ive never had a scoob before and just wanted one, when i went to the dealer to look at the cars he gave me the key to the MY98 first.

Once inside etc etc i wanted it , in fact i didnt even look at the MY99. at the time 30k on a MY98 was better than 36K on a MY99 to me.

Anyway, i bought the MY98 for £13.5 eventually, never even saw the MY99.

If i had been on here then (didnt find scoobynet until 6 months after i bought the scoob)and knew what i know now about scoobies i would have gone for the MY99

Pros and cons of the MY99 over MY98:

Higher spoiler standard
facelift/better looking front end and crystal lights/fogs
height adjustable front seats, but material is worse then MY98 apparantly (so ive been told)
215bhp (MY98 is 208bhp)
ECU can be upgraded by ECUtek/Delta dash (cheaper than the minimal 3 options ofr MY98 - Prodrive (like rocking horse ****), PE remap (over £600), Link (over £1k))
4 pot front brakes (MY98 = 2 pots) & vented rear discs

Other then the above (and any others i forgot) the MY98 interior is the same as the MY99

If your happy with the high milage (new clutch, gearbox, turbo ????), go for the MY99, otherwise get the MY98.

personally (unless the MY98 is a MY99 model) i'd go for the MY99 - although i still love my MY98

hope this helps
chris

EddScott - take your time looking for one. If a car looks good on paper, and pics look ok, it's worth travelling for, imho.

There are loads available, so don't go getting too excited over the first one you find. A lot of insurance companies require a tracker (make sure yours has told you exactly which one they want, eg Monitor, Retrive, etc) so there should be a few cars with this already fitted.

Shop around for insurance. A quick look in the Insurance section should point you in the right direction.

Good luck.
