It really is quite simple. Buy a full decat and a tek 2 or 2.5 ecu over scoobynet and run it for at least a year
Lets say you get the zorts second hand for £300 and the ECU for £350 - thats you got a good whack of performance for £650 and between 260-80bhp depending on the rollers, air temp, your cars mood, etc.
Here is the cunning part When I had a full decat and tek my normal driving would see 290-300 miles out of a tank (we'll say 300). With my car totally standard now I get 250-60 miles out of a tank (we'll say 260). This means with the tek I get (from 55 litres) 25mpg and with the standard car 21.6 (call it 22mpg)(note: I drive pretty hard ). The reason for this is that the car is less retricted with the cats removed and I'm pretty sure the tek uses less fuel most of the time than the standard map.
Assuming average miles of 12k a year you would need 40 fill ups with a tek and 46 fill ups with the standard car. Based in Edinburgh at 81p a litre (SUL) I pay about £45 a fill up so you have just saved £45x6 = £270 in fuel in a year....even more if you do above average miles and if like me you do 24k a year then its £540.
Assuming you sell your bits for a little less than you paid, you'd get £200 for the full decat and £300 for the ecu returning £500. You've lost £150 on your initial investment but saved £270 on fuel so you are up £170 But, there is the insurance issue The decat will probably put most policies up by about £100-200 so you've just broken even. The tek is a remap of a standard MY99/00 ecu and it reports itself as an normal ecu. Only the most totally paranoid, straight up people in the world would think of declaring it.
Hey presto. You just drove a nice burbly Impreza that is 2.5s quicker to 100mph than the standard car and it cost you absolutely nothing
What you waiting for?????

SB,
What do you do in your spare time
Great logic. I did the buying bit , got the fuel consumption but then flogged the car with everything on it!
You buying a house or what?

Bought the house just modding it now. I'm getting it stripped and lightened with hardwood flooring, uprated lighting, more powerful cooker and a superhot high pressure saxo boy spray (shower )

Wait until Emmerdale or Corrie are on, and make a comment about the TV, then as she looks at the screen, put the tek and cat behind your back and sneak past her.
Hey presto...... you've snuck them past the missus!
What do you mean, "thats not what I meant"

73.7 for SUL
To get round the missus start with the tek. She'll not notice the difference and you can fit the new ecu somewhere in the countryside with a screw-driver
Next do the exhaust a bit at a time. Start with the centre, again she'll not notice. Then the downpipe but comment that the car seems a little louder but Subaru checked it out and its ok. Next change the pee-shooter with permission (but its only £150 or so luv) Suddenly its loud and fast as heck and you can say, 'wow, can't believe the difference changing the back-box made pet' If in doubt, use a dawes to hold back the boost and then unleash the tek 2.5 fury right at the end at which time its too late for her to object to how fast the car suddenly is.....THEN you comment on how you seem to be getting more to a tank

Look up the definition of "a kept man" in the dictionary and you'll see a photo of a Scooby driver parked up deep in the countryside, screwdriver in hand, changing his ECU!!!
Jeez guys, some of your wives must be a bloody nightmare when it comes to spending money on mods!!
I'm pretty lucky in that my fiancee is always on my back to do more to my car and hers (Clio Cup)
"If you've got a performance exhaust on the Subaru, I need one for the Clio" springs to mind!

OK, but how do you achieve fuel consumption figures like that?
I have MY99 Impreza with TSL full decat/panel filter and John Banks ECUTEK 2.5, no nkown problems, regularly serviced at TSL and am lucky to get 200 miles to a tank Urban driving and 250 miles motorway run. You say you drive hard, so how come mpg is much better? anyone else get similar fuel consumption with similar mods

Saxo boy: I am assuming you are not running the tank down to below red - empty. The 200 mile consumption on my car is from top full down to about 1/8 tank approx (only been in this situation a few times...where is that optimax garage!). I usually top up at just less than 1/4 getting around 180 miles depending on how hard the car is driven. This is all runs to work/town etc...
So I guess this would extend to around 220 miles perhaps taking the tank down to fumes (not that I would ever do this!)
Motorway driving I have seen 250-260 miles at best down to 1/8 tank approx.
I thought 17-20 mpg was about ther norm for urban/town driving and around 25-28 mpg for motorway? Though I know the decat may improve mpg slightly.

my work partner has a TT chipped by REVO,extra 35 bhp ,it also gives the advantage of an sps system, which incorperates it's own immobilliser , i have spoken to them and maybe something in the future for scoobies!they took us out in their RS4 running 440 bhp, now that was quick!

I've read quite a lot about REVO and I've been very impressed....yet to experience their magic though
I alway run the tank from, 'so full you can see it' to 'please god let me make it' I usually use 20-30miles after the red light.

i know what you mean about the solicitors thing, and you have to pay for it..... in more ways than one.
i don't think the buying of a motec helped my situation much.
but hey, i've got the house to myself now and i'm boosting 21psi.
