after all this time i have never had it explained exactly what the deal was with Simon (webmasters) record breaking endeavour.
can some one elborate please?

Simon set the WORLD RECORD for driving a car (Subaru Impreza WRX MY01) in a controlled slide for the longest time 
That was 2 hours, 11 minutes and 18 seconds
The distance travelled was approximately 80 miles - the same distance as from London to Swindon down the M4
It was an immense achievement, both to Simon's powers of concentration and skill, and also to the immense support given to him by his sponsors.

where was it done and what inspired? also how did the car get setup as we all know the inherent understeer scoobs suffer from?
a great achievment none the less - i take it the tyres were knackered!
why did he stop? enough was enough? tyre blowout? loss of concentration?
also, what was the spec of said machine?

It was done at Mira test facility.
there were plenty of scoobynetters there and at the time a live post commentary.
The tyres were prepared Toyos and I think eventually fuel caused the loss of control. Mind due running out of Mars bars has been mentioned.
He was aiming for about 20 mins I think and got carried away
