Do you get it? I have had id often! You start the car and it moves with a horrendous screachy sound! It freaks you out until you get rid of any stone or gravel bit which was caught between the disc and the brakepad. How can one prevent it and, it must be harmful for the disks!

sounds more like the pads are sticking to the discs

I find it extremely difficult to believe that stones etc can get trapped between your pads & discs, no matter where the car is from

the pads surface is always in contact with the discs
if they arent I would say you have got some serious problems

Have a look at your pads, I have seen some that have a slight tapered lead in, that could allow small bits to get trapped.

Theres no way gravel would get in there. Dust maybe, stones and gravel no. Your brake pads are always in contact with the discs to some degree. In some wetter climates brake discs rust up very fast, but it just sounds to me like you need some brake cleaner spray onto the discs and grease on the back of the pads..

Talking

Happens to me in my MY99 uk they squeek like mad at low speed every so often but immediately stops when I reverse. Dealer said it is a piece of grit or sand getting between the pad and disk and is common and nothing to worry about.

Thumbs up

What's a far more likely problem is a piece of grit between the disc and the disc backing plate at the back of the disc.
I've had this twice, before removing said backing plate, after fitting uprated larger discs.
I don't think that this will cause real probs, although it does sound horrendous, as there's not enough pressure between the disc and the plate. The noise comes mainly from the plate anyway.

happened to me in a 94 wrx (import) with EBC Greenstuff brakes .. horrible screeching sound from front left side.

Called out the AA and the guy took off the front wheel and released the offending stone with a screwdriver.

sorted.

This has happened to me twice in the year I've had mine (2002 sti). The first time it happened I really panicked, but realised after backing up a bit what it must have been. This is the only car I've had that has done this, so it must be a Subaru thing.

Yep, happened to me too. Hadn't had the car long and it's never happened to any other car I've owned.
I did certainly crap myself thinking my brakes were fecked.
Same remedy as the other guys, just reversed a few inches and voila!!!
