Much higher spec than UK STI.
Pay 11-14K for a good one.
Avoid 95 Octane fuel like the plague.
Insurance is on the strong side.

One of the ultimate scoobs in my book. Go for it. Fantastic drivers car.

Downsides.
Bascialy stronger than a WRX overall (no cr*p powerstearing reseviour etc etc, lots of small things seem to go wrong on WRXs I have had - but not the engines)
Stis far more reliable overall nothing may well go wrong untill the engine blows. Have a couple of grand tucked away for an engine rebuild.
They are expensive to run tyres, petrol, and insurence budget for this...

...but it will be the best thing you have ever driven...probably

Good / bad, anything really.
Very good, if taken care of, and if it's the sort of car you're looking for.

whats the standard spec?
Er, if you don't know the answer to this question already, you're probably better off with a UK spec car.

Lightweight bodyshell with most sound deadening removed, aluminium lower front arms. On Japanese 100 RON fuel, something like 295bhp and 270lb/ft torque. Close ratio five speed box and 7900rpm rev limit, so 0-60 in something like 4.3 seconds, 150 or so top, but noisy and even worse fuel economy than UK turbos at cruising speeds. Driver-controlled centre differential gives power-on handling adjustable from understeery to oversteery, which is brill when you know the car, but could be a bit scary if all you've ever driven is FWD.

Whats a good price to pay?
Very much dependent on mileage and condition, and whether it's a V-Limited or not.

What to avoid?
Modifications/remaps/boost increases, unless performed in the UK by a well-regarded firm. If it's just come over from Japan, bog standard is best, bog standard with a full service history is even better.

Insurance?
Don't leave home without it. You may need to ring around a bit as many companies either won't insure Japanese market cars at all, or will only cover you if you're over 60/female/have spotless record/no points etc. etc. etc.

Im getting intrested on buying one of these
Not trying to sound elitist or anything, but these cars demand a little more attention than a normal UK market car, so if you've not run a Subaru before you might want to bear that in mind, and possibly opt for a UK car in preference.

The previous advice about "avoiding 95 RON" doesn't go far enough. Either remapping for UK fuel or Super Unleaded/Optimax plus the correct amount of good octane booster plus a KnockLink is absolutely essential unless you want to risk it going bang in a major way, as, really, are a boost gauge and AFR meter.

The comment about the spec being better than a UK STi is also slightly moot, as there is no UK market STi of the same model year.

They're great enthusiast's cars, but not as practical a daily proposition as a UK market Turbo, especially if you do lots of miles. If you are thinking about one of these, think very carefully about whether it offers the sort of package you are looking for.

thanks for all the infomation

I will admit im new to the scoobs and know nothing lol..

It seems the the Jap version seems a bit much for me and diddent know they were that complicated..

It was the look of the car that caught my attention realy so from going from an Escort RS turbo (225bhp) to that may seem a little much, and yes all i have had is FWD!
Is this car available in the UK spec? and whats the comparison between the both..

Cheers

No, as mentioned above there is no UK market equivalent. The closest is the regular Turbo 2000.

You could always change your username to PulsarRS.

Well although what's been said is true i went from an erst to a sti V2, not as extreme as the type r v5 but defo worth it. If you do decide to get one get it from a reputable dealer pref. one recommended by here and get a good warranty. Oh and ask lots of questions on here about them.

For the sake of pedantry, there's no such thing as a 3 door Impreza, the coupé is a 2 door.

FWIW the only 2 door Imprezas are the Type R's, the P1 and the 22B.

Yah UK equivalent of the Type R is the P1 (pretty much a de-tuned Type-R with best of the goodies removed and taller gearing etc.
