Part should be approx £108 and labour 2-3 hours so should be in the region of £200-250 depending on the labour cost

Edited to say I think the labour charges I incurred were nearer £45 ph so you could be looking at £300 but that should be tops and inc VAT

You've only got 2 cams though!!

I did my own (with a proper Subaru belt) in 1.5 hours at a cost of £50. I believe the belts cost £70ish now (but not from main dealers!!) - I got one when they were on special offer from somewhere.

It's not that difficult on the older classics (the ones with the nicer tensioner! ) if you've done cambelts before. Don't be put off by it having as many cams as cylinders!

A mechanic acquaintance said he would do it for £50 + the belt as long as the car didn't have AC, as it would take a bit longer and cost about £70 + belt cost.

Halfords will squirm their way out of anything that involves them putting a hand in a pocket (unless it yours!).

Was told always use a genuine belt - so was £108 for the belt too expensive or about right given it wasnt bought on 'special'???

Depend what you want to be changed. You can do the belt and nothing else, that's the cheap solution.
I plan to replace everything Belt, tentioner, all pulley and the alternator belt. I know it is the safe and expensive solution, but I hope I can run trouble free for the next 60K miles

Subaru use Gates belts; so a gates belt is original in all but the name that they wrote on it. Subaru Service Centre in Sheffield will do a 4 cam belt for £175+.
