Coming back from mcr city centre yesterday, stopped at the shell garage on the a6, saw the optimax pump sign, pulled alongside it, but busy station so had to swing the pump over my boot.
grabbed the first pump, spilt petrol down my wheel! then put £20 in.
Then noticed to my horror that I had put normal unleaded in! DOH!
I then realised I hadn't even been looking what I was doing, and the pump next to it was LRP, phew, lucky escape.
No problems running 1 tank of normal as I have done it before, but just goes to show how easy it is to screw things up.

Aren't unleaded pumps and fuel fillers smaller than the 4* / LRP versions?

I'd hate to think what you're like when you don't think.

I know a lady at work who put petrol in her new Polo TDi, then drove off. The car then proceeded to die and had to have the engine flushed out

A few years ago a young lad who just passed his test was working at a garage. His boss asked him to go and collect his car from home and to fill up the tank on the way.

The lad was so excited about driving the boss's car, it was a one week old BMW 7 series.

He duly went into the petrol station and filled the car up.

Paid the money, got back into the car and drove down the road. About a mile or so later the car started to cough and sputter. He rang his boss, slightly worried cos the car was a new one. His boss arrived to find the lad almost in tears.

There was this brand new shiny 7 series, a full tank of DIESEL!!

The lad received his P45, the car received a new engine, fuel system and tank.

As regards the risk of detonation, I believe the ECU detects the onset of knocking and adjusts matters accordingly, so you should be safe. I did the same as you this weekend but the pump was so erratic I only managed to get £2.00 in before I realised!

Doesn't the ECU adjust to worse quality fuel but not back up to test for better quality fuel later?

Anyway, don't you find that you go into a bit of a "Subaru Fuelling Trance" when filling the tank, staring into the middle distance, and stopping all brain activity until the pump clicks off? Helps you cope with the cost I find, otherwise, it seems to take forever and you're there so often.

Why isn't there a scooby or an evo on the optimax cards? I don't really fancy any of the others. Just can't get excited. Even when I rub my trouser front up against them in a car park.

That will slow you down on the snake now. Where I used to work in Dukinfield they got a brand new MAN lorry, they had only had petrol Transits before. The driver filled it up to the top with petrol. God knows how he got it back to work but when he came to start it again it wouldn't. Oh by the way it was a 200 gallon tank.
