Bonnet vents - why? design question
#1
Someone might know the anwer to this.. Why did subaru design the new shape wrx to not include the 2 front bonnet vents, with weather like this those vents on the classic must be doing some good.

they are merely decorative
they are blanked off underneath, and not a good idea to remove the blanking plates either by all accounts
unless you have an Induction kit, and some people get a mini scoop instead of the grill, so colder air is forced down into the ind kit, instead of using hot engine bay air

i have taken my vent covers off my wrx and never had a problem, In my opinion its a waste of time having them if your gonna leave the covers on, especially in this weather... But thats just my opinion !!

Don't quote me on this, but I had heard taking off the covers creates more pressure inside the bay increasing charge temps. instead of the desired lowering.
The smaller vent scoop design creates a flow that does feed more air in.
Also heard that the standard classic scoop is made redundant over 65mph with aerodynamics throwing airflow over it. Prodrive even made a splitter that sits on front edge of bonnet to cure this.
Can anyone confirm above, and is it a worthwhile plan to develop an Sti8 version scoop with internal splitter for classic?

I think I'm right in saying that the original Scoob had bonnet vents because the rally car needed them. For homologation reasons, this meant the road car had to have them. As has already been mentoned, they were blanked off on the road car as they weren't needed.

I was led to believe the scoop stopped being functional over 100mph
Also DR Motorsports now do an STi 8 Scoop for the Classics

i have taken my cover of that sits over the battery, just for summer, sitting in traffic can see a massive haze come from the vent, so i asume its benifical
im not prepaired to have the other cover off tho, as any rain would drip onto the airflow meter

Ever so slightly off topic but,
I was at a meet recently and a guy with an STi7 was commenting that the whole front of the car gets extremely hot even after a short run. We're talking hot wings as well as bonnet. I was just wondering if those silly indicator/reflector things in the front wings of bugeyes could be utilised for ventilation with a little ducting.

Are you sure you want the cone type? They can be more trouble than they're worth - especially if the garage concerned didn't tell you what make and type of induction kit they're fitting...
