Thumbs up

Not quite in the same league but the Skoda Octavia vRS isn't at all bad. With the TT 1.8 turbo (185bhp) and 4WD for around £16k it's quite a bargain. I'm sure all the TT mods will drop straight on too.

Still rather have a Scoob tho'

Edited to say "I'm very sorry for mentioning the TT on this BBS"

I've just sold an Focus RS. It was faster than the standard WRX and I would say seemed as fast as the WRX with PPP.

Dream on, it's a good car but not that good

It seems to me that only subaru with their impreza and Mitsubushi with their evo, are the only car companys making cars with this performance for such a low price.

I'm not so sure anymore. Ford with the Focus RS(admittedly limted run), VW with the Golf R32, Renault with the Clio 172(inc cup), BMW with mini cooper S, Honda with the Civic type R and Alfa with the 147 GTA.

Now some of them might not have the BHP but all of them will give a standard WRX a run for it's money in the average day on the roads.

Question

Back in the 80s, the launch of the Golf GTi started a new generation of hot hatches. The likes of Pug's 205 and 309 GTi caused a stir, as did the insane Renault 5 Turbo. Plus there were the faster bigger cars like the Quattro.

However, with all these looney cars about, being afforded by younger drivers, crashes and thefts sent insurance premiums soaring, and after a while, no-one bothered with these cars, and manufacturers stopped making them.

Thus resulting in a barren few years with sod all cars of any interest.

Does anyone reckon that today's explosion of hot hatches will cause a repeat of the same problem? Are we headed for a recession of fast, exciting cars?

Duck.

Maybe I am just anti ford but they don't really have the same image and I was mainly considering family size cars.

I dont know if this is going to happen as many young people cant afford to run/ insure some of these cars with the everyday costs. Fair enough as a model becomes older and therefore cheaper it attracts people that once were unable to purchase it.

There are some cheaper alternaives to the scoob i think, e.g. the clio is quick, but smaller. The RS may be quicker on a normal road but isnt scoob meant for the back roads, with bends that normally upset these other cars. No other manufactures a car that matches or attempts to match its WRC car other than scoob and the mitsi, no other AWD cars for the price that perform overall so well. RS4?? TT Quattro??

I have a lot of mates that keep up with my wrx but as soon as i get out in the sticks its see you later time.

Even IF the above cars are somewhere near the performance of the scooby, lets face it, they come nowhere near in the looks department

The Octavia RS is FWD but only 15k...

(there is however a 4wd for 16k, same engine running less boost \ 150bhp standard)
