Im in my thirties now and should know better but today, coming home from work,i was following a 206 GTi with 4 big tail pipes and a massive wrc style spoiler. After following him for a while, round a few islands etc. it was clear to see he was driving his car quite hard, with me steadily keeping up behind.
Its a road i know well, twisty B road crossing cannock chase. You round one corner and theres a quatre mile straight before a sharp 80 degree right hand bend which i know i can get round at 70mph.
I thought id show him what a proper can do,so i overtook him on the straight.Approaching the bend im doing 87 or 88mph and feelin good. Not wanting to show him my brake lights,i turned in and knew instantly i was goin too fast.
The back swung out, tyres screamin and im starting to slide towards the verge and trees.Im on opposite lock and then opposite lock the other way to get straight again, but i made it round the corner.Fair play to the car.Ive never pushed it that hard before.I proper **** myself, thought i was dead but i bet peugeot driver was imprest.think im gona get some driver training cus the car is obviously more capeable than i am.

Imprezas have incredible grip, but it isn't unbreakable as you found out.
Did you lift off when you were half way through the bend?

Thumbs down

Oh dear, another psyscho Impreza driver

We all insist on doing things like this but it just isn't worth the risk...and in your case all for the sake of impressing a crappy Peuegot driver.

Perhaps you should think next time before you over take.

Perhaps if it was a right hander and you had overtaken on the straight you did not have time and were under pressure, so you were not fully in to the left side of the road to take the bend at the best approach.

Also if you can take it at 70, then there is at least an exponential increase in grip required to take it at 88. If you know a corner is OK at 70 perhaps smaller increases in corner speed (on track ) are worth doing each time you attempt the said corner. +18 mph is a massive change, plus the angle of the bend, clearly too fast, you would lose time from scrubbing off all the speed even though you avoided the roadside furniture.

Scoobies are best going into corners at sensible speed and powering out early. They are not easily recoverable if you tank too fast into a bend, and not very controllable on the throttle during turn in compared with less powerful cars.

Very forgiving until they bite and then not that forgiving.

Agreed John - pray for snow this winter, and get out there and practice somewhere safe. Remember, it is not the bend that is unsafe - it is you! When you can drive your car within the limits of the car, only then does the bend become a non issue. You should not be matching the speed of your car to the bend. You should be matching the ability of the car to yours! Only then, can you look at a bend and "know" how to "take it".
Mind you, that's a load of rcap, when you can't see the exit!!!

If you're able to get to North Weald Aerodrome, go for a day with 1stlotus (www.1stlotus.co.uk IIRR)taking your Scooby (despite the name, it's not Lotus orientated). First day is on cornering control. Highly recommended.

The great thing about my wagon is that i get a gentle slide from the rear end when i know i had pushed it too far, just let off the gas a little and everything falls back into place, you must have really gone too far for it to react like that!! glad you made it though!!

Might have been sh*tting himself if he was close enough to get involved in the accident, if it had happened

Sort of reminds me of when I racing a MR2 Turbo down the rabbit run. I forgot that I was doing umpteen-hundred MPH so when I hit the "s" bends at the end of the big straight. The car decided to understeer, forcing me boot it to compensate (get the back end out) So I endup going sideways round the first bend. But obviously, booting it ment I was too fast for the 2nd bend, and the car was too unsettled (i.e sideways) to brake. So I power slid round that one too!

How I got round I do not know, But I remember my mate screaming
MR2 kept up too - respect to that man!

Thats one beutiful thing about scoobs, they handle great, but when on or over the limit, you can still control the car (depending on driving abilities)

i enter the corners more slowly and bang the throttle to the floor when I can see the exit...

That's because I had a similar experience to this... except after the 2nd steering correction I overcorrected and the car made love to a tree as her final act on this earth.

I was a lucky b@stard and got away with bruising from the seatbelt...
And a smashed up scooby, especially when it's YOUR baby, is a heart wrenching experience that can drive a grown man to tears... :'(

You can have too much of a good thing. Try one of the old VW beetles on a wet day if you really want to experience oversteer. It all happens at such low speeds too.
