If it's an 03MY, the book says 95 RON and the fuel filler door advises 97 RON.
How do they know it's only 95 RON? Tell them you religiously fill it with SUL. Mine came filled with a tank of Jets finest 95 RON UL and it was the dealer that filled it up from new, said it only needed UL!!!
Ring round a few dealers and ask for their recommendation on fuel and a call to IM to ask the same would be useful.

If you need some legal representation you'd be best advised to look in the Yellow Pages. We could give you some technical advice though, especially in regard to this claim about using the "wrong" fuel.
What sort of car do you have (UK model? Jap import?), and what exactly went wrong?

This sucks!

I hope you get this sorted out. You had the car 11 days, how many miles and how many tankfuls of fuel have you used.
Did the dealership initially fill it up for you and if so what with?
Talk to the CAB and good luck.
Sounds to me like the garage are trying to pull a fast one - IMHO

DJ140 - when you state that the fuel filler door specifies 97 RON, does it actually use that number, or does it just say "Super Unleaded Gasoline"? Super means different things in different markets, and so you're better off going by the manual which is specifically for the UK market.
I'm assuming that the car was brand new and had only been run for 11 days. It's therefore likely that it was still being run in, and so the chances of the wrong fuel blowing it up at <4000rpm are rtemote to say the least.

sorry i should have given more info.
the car is a my 99 uk wagon totally standard bought on 9.7.03
i have filled this up twice 1st with optimax second with normal unleaded (i had no choice as i was desperate for fuel).
the car developed the fault on sunday 20.7.03.
at first the dealer said was was not prepaired to do anything.i then went to trading standards who advised me under the sale of goods act etc.anyway after another converstation he agreed to pick the car up.it has been to a performance centre in oldham and they have told the dealer that it has been run on the wrong fuel (unleaded).the dealer has then rang me and said the above and does not care what the handbook say's or what subaru say he would argue with them all and not to ring him again and just do it legally. hence i need a solicitor to send this guy a letter stating that unless he gives me a full refund in the next 7 working days court procedings will be issued.
btw
it has 77k on service @ every interval spot on time by a subaru dealership
when i refer to the above dealer, i mean just a normal garage and not a scoob dealer

I would give them the car back (which is probably still in their possesion) and give them the key back too, reject the car on the grounds "this car is unfit to drive". Demand a full refund or a fully reconditioned engine with receipt.
They are trying to pull a fast one, if it says it can run on 95 in the manual then you have done nothing wrong. If they still refuse to give your money back ask for the reason in writing and once you have this, take it to a solicitor together with your handbook.
Solicitors can be very expensive though.I use Nelsons in Derby, good but expensive.

I have run my 98 wagon on 95 ron many times with no problem, i think uk cars are mapped for this if i am correct?? This sounds like a bad case of taking your money and running, i really feel for you mate, good luck and if you do get your money back, please please go to a subaru dealer!!

This certainly sounds sh!te and very unfortunate.
Thing is, IMO this engine must have been prety shot before you bought it obviously and i'd be very suprised if 1 tank of 95ron had any bearing on it letting go anyway, especially as its a UK car.
I hope you can get it sorted m8.
