Hi,

I'm looking for a bit of advice from WRX or STi saloon owners, classic shape with electric boot mounted aerial.

I've bought an electric aerial to be mounted on my UK MY00 and was wondering a few things.

1) Does the aerial go up when you turn the ignition on? or when you turn the radio on?

2) Does it stay up when a CD is playing, or does it only go up when the radio is operating?

3) Is it able to be manually lowered? (by switch etc?)

Assuming it runs the same as other vehicles it will go up when the radio is on , and stay up regardless of the source, only going back down when the radio is swithced off.

Most aerials have three wires, 2 for power and 1 for switch on. You can always test by using a volt meter or a 12v bulb to see which it actually does if the wires are there.

Switch lowering is easy, you just route the control wire through a switch so that you can force it to stay down regardless.

Remember that when somebody else in a Scooby turns their radio off your aerial will go down too.

years back I had a pioneer system on an opel, that had electric ariel, turn radio on ariel up, radio off ariel down, shove tape [yes tape remember them ? I did say years back talking 18 here] in radio came on started to please the tape, ariel stayed down, but you could on & off the radio so the ariel went up & down like a 1 fingered salute

So, the blue "remote wire" from the stereo will tell the aerial to get its *** up when its on, but what about the power wire?

Should it be a continuous live? (from battery) or a switched live? (from ignition)

I suppose it could be a continuous live, as my radio is a switched live, ie only when ignition is on.
The ignition would require to be on for the radio to have power to remote put the aerial up.

Shouldn't the third wire be an earth?

For switch lowering, would it be the "remote wire" or "power wire" that I route through a switch?

on my stiV the aerial goes up when i select the radio, if i insert a cd it then goes down

Andy, I wonder if this
has anything to do with the head unit you are using?

My theory is that your ignition gives power to the head unit, and as soon as power is received, it remote puts the aerial up. For the aerial only to go up when radio is on, the head unit must be able to ascertain whether the aerial is required and when tuning function is selected, ascend the aerial....

Any other thoughts?

one wire probably red with a fuse inline is the permanent live.

the other <live> is fed from the radio antenna wire it switches a relay on the antenna you can switch this wire yourself if you want to make it go up and down when you want.
if there is a third wire it is indeed the earth some earth through the bodymount.
my legacy can be put up by a switch on the dash but it could be controlled by the radio too.

some head units put the aeriel down when on another source some dont

mine stay's up if cd is playing so you can still get RDS traffic if you really really want to have your CD's intrupted by about 4 local crappy stations every 15mins (all within 30 secs of each other...)

It definately depends upon the Head thou as I had a Mazda 323f which sent the ariel down if you were playing CD's but then put it back up if you selected RDS TA or TP or NEWS etc...

Well , got my aerial fitted and it's the dogs!

It activates when the radio is turned on, and goes down when CD is selected which is cool.
