Hi,

Just thought I'd introduce myself... new member, me. I'm 'shadowninja' on pistonheads.com, if any of you use it... I might be shadowninja here too, dunno... can't remember password

Currently drive a 200sx (S13a) and TVR Chimaera, but need something more practical than the S13a (have the TVR for drifting )

Thinking about buying a classic Impreza Turbo 2000, MY99 with the newer front and the 'forked' 5 spokes (assuming the car I do eventually buy hasn't had aftermarket alloys put on). So what do these go for private and at dealers?

Forgot to ask...
1) Can you use normal unleaded (95RON) with standard cars?
2) How easy to tune to over 250bhp, costwise?
3) Can I still use 95RON if it's been tuned?

Thanks.

-Darren

Hi and welcome to scoobynet.

3) Can I still use 95RON if it's been tuned?
1. Yes but you will lose power and responsiveness.

2. Fairly easy, probably around the 1-1.5K mark depending on how you achieve it(have a look in the drivetrain forum) as there are more ways to do it and companies who will do it for you than I can remember.
E.g(by no means exhaustive)

Popular ways are to get rid of the cats and remap the ECU.

Prodrive do a performance pack(PPP), which although does'nt reach 250bhp concentrates on driveability and torque(240Bhp and 240lb/ft torque) does have the benefit of being a recognised mod by dealers and Subaru which will help come resale time. Also if the car you buy has an extended warranty the PPP will still be valid. The PPP comprises of a new ECU, centre section, back box and some uprated hoses.

3. A cagey no, you'll need to use SUL if you've tuned it.
The caveat is, is that if you have the ECU Mapped so that you can still use 95 RON(but you generally, then get less power and responsiveness so what's the point).

Got my MY99 in easter this year, and it is still making me grin everytime I go out, even to the shops.
Got a couple of asian car valeters at the lights asking if they could clean it yesterday after work, hehe.
I would take them up on it, but don't fancy a dirty used sponge all over my carefully prepared bodywork, sorry guys.
Really have rediscovered the joy of motoring since I got the scooby, buy one, have fun, be safe,
chris.

Seeing as Neils covered all your questions I'll just say if you drive one you will probably buy one!

I did drive one about 4 years ago but I also then drove a Chimaera.

Now I have the funds for an Impreza, too...

Cool

Welcome to the board - I can't really add much more than what Neil has put.

Try a UK Impreza, and one of the two import options - WRX or one of the STI models.

Hi and welcome

A couple of suggestions:
- if you get an imported STI rather than a UK-spec MY99 then you won't need to tune it - you'll have 270bhp+ to begin with. In this case you certainly won't be able to use 95RON fuel though, you'll need a mixture of SUL and octane booster unless the car has been remapped.

- the PPP for UK-spec cars (at least for MY99 and MY00) does let you run 95 RON without damage, although as Neil says you'll forfeit power and smoothness. I've had the PPP on my car for about 2 years and have had to run it on 95 RON occasionally.

I bought a UK car new about 3 1/2 years ago, and although it's been great, I do sometimes wish I'd paid a bit extra and gone for an STI. Maybe next time...

A.

Ultimate acceleration isn't really an issue for me I suppose. I mean even as standard the Impreza Turbo 2000 is very fast, and can be driven quickly in the wet (unlike the TVR, which is more about trying to stay on the black stuff than driving fast )

Out of interest is it possible to fit a torque splitter to send the power to perhaps the rear wheels only? What cost would this be at?

Some STIs have that option anyway - type RA is the one, I believe.

I'm aware of that but I was particularly interested in getting a UK model...
