Question

Just got my first scooby, a w reg 2000 turbo, can't stop grinning.Everything about the car is still new to me and as such i'm continually listening out for strange noises etc. At between 2500 and 3000 revs the engine seems to emit an annoying humming, this either goes after 3000 or is drowned out by the engine . At low speeds (30mph) in a low gear (2nd) the power delivery seems to fluctuate in pulses. Could these issues be related . I'm currently using 95 ron unleaded .If the former owner used 97 ron could this account for the fluctuation in power as the ecm takes time to asjust. Thanks in advance.

If it's a metallic hum then it could be an exhaust heat sheild

Thanks for the advice on fuel, looks like the fill ups are going to be even more expensive from now on. With regard to the humming it's hard to describe, not really metallic but it just gets into your head. Maybe i'm being paranoid, maybe i should let someone take a look at her .
Cheers

Sounds like heat shield to me. Mine started as a funny noise at particular revs but after a while it became clear it was the heat shield as it just buzzed all the time.

I think the heatshield is a likely contender for this

Question

It could be the brake pipes, they sometimes vibrate against the bulkhead on MY99/00's.

They all do that, sir!
Don't know about the rattling, but the power hesitation in 2nd happens when you hold revs between 3-4k rpm for a few seconds and then try to floor it. Apparantly down to some emissions testing feature of the ecu. This 'feature' is well documented here. Does this sound like the prob??

Enjoy the car - it's great isn't it

Sorry for the delay in answering, had to go to work! Thanks for all your responses, and in reply in now particular order. No she hasn't been in a lake (at least i hope not, no duck weed under the seats). Sounds like the heat sheild could be worth checking out, the humming definately sounds louder when running at normal temp than when cold . I've just filled up with Optimax, as of yet no discernable difference in the power fluctuation when cold, due to traffic couldn't check for any performance improvement. The fuel attendant seemed happier though!!
Thanks Treacle

You may not see much difference with Optimax, but it is protecting your engine from detonation, which is not nice!
