Question

Hey everyone, whats the best first few mods to start tuning a 93' WRX? All ready have a 4" back box and straight through middle box fitted but no other mods! Have a couple of grand to spend tops! It all ready looks stuning with its oversized rally spoiler so not bothered about modding looks, just performance! After all thats why I choose that over a 300ZX!

biggest "cheap" gain would be a de-cat downpipe, gives better spool up and midrange. Makes your moderately quick car feel like a fookin' quick car

Cool

you may want to get a racing cat fitted (a bit pricey) or just swap the centre section out come MoT time.

or buy a catted centre section from a UK car which people sell on here all the time for about £20-50 and fit that, which is alot easier than fitting the down pipe..!! Your car will pass with just the centre cat on, but make sure they take the car for a good run before the emissions test to heat the cat up properly.

my 93 wrx passed the emmission test without any cats

would go with the majority, de-cat down pipe, induction, dependinng upon your preference look at re-map form the likes of PE or similar or you could go for the boost controller and fuel cut lifter methods, look at bigger injectors 440's or 550 depending upon preference and wallet for fuel

could have some serious fun for 2k, would seriously think about upgrading front brakes to 4 pots though !!!

Yeh cheers Rich Tee, think those brakes definately need sorting first, luck the car handles well and is forgiving enough to make up for entering the corner too fast due to lack of braking power! Was looking at leaving the calipers and going for a set of cross drilled and grooved discs with some green stuff pads, is this worth the £260 it would cost me for this upgrade? Did a similar upgrade on a Tomcat which desperatly needed better brakes and the difference was very noticable, with the brakes been alot more grabby, but the Tomcat's brakes were absoultly rubbish beforehand so any margin of increase was better!

I've also been told as its a Jap import it will get away without a cat as they don't know what was on it when it was manufactured!?

ECU upgrade and air filter looks like a must too, have seen a nice twin cone silver air filter, will have to try and find where to get it!

Do dump valves make any difference apart from the obvious noise to the standard re-circulation valve?

Cheers

a Pre 95 car without a CAT, should be MOT tested with the NON-CAT emmissions test limits and hence should pass. A Post 95 car will be tested against CAT emmission limits and will probably fail without a CAT.

My MY97 WRX just fails the emission test when running totally cat-less. ( BTW it only takes 10 mins to change the downpipe once your used to it )

tbh m8, dont wast your money on doing just the discs and pads, i did this first up, replacing discs and pads all round with tarox for a cost of over £600, and i have just recently put the standard subaru 4 pots on with group n discs, - no competition, the biggest problem with the brakes is that they are 2 pots and just arent really up to it. If you watch the for sale section , 4 pots will come up and you will probably be able to do this for around 3-400, or send a mail to rally colin, I know he had some new 4 pots and discs for sale recently.

edited to say heard red stuff pads are much better than green stuff

Dump vale - VTA sound nice IMHO, dont think it really makes much difference to performance though, basially get the breathing sorted, exhaust, induction etc, then go for a re-map, if you have the money put some bigger injectors in before you get the map and then you should be able to run some good numbers

The emission test is there to check for a working cat and I thought during an MOT they do a visual inspection to make sure that a cat has been also been fitted. The early imports may get away with it due to being around the time that cats came in 1992/1993.

When my MY00 import was MOT there were tolerances that it had get and passed no problem with the single downpipe cat. Most tuners/specialists/dealers will tell you a decat car will fail an emissions test unless its tested as a car with no cats as standard.
Some only just get through with just a centre cat so hardly likely to get through with no cat.
