Hi Guys

From the start i drive another brand of car,but latley as nice as it is im thinking of a change to a scooby,my mates only 22 and got a 94 - 95 uk spec estate and to say it out runs my car is a under statement..!! But the prob ive got is ive not got alot of money to buy one so ive been looking around...

Ive been told not to bother with imports because of parts and condition and you dont know what your buying ie: writen off,or stolen... What you guys and think,do any of you run imports were did you get them from..??

Would really like a UK spec, but not having a big amount of money, and will probley use my other car for P/X,which if im lucky, very lucky will may get 3k - 3.5k tops,so have to increase the bank loan :-(

What would you guys do..?

Thanks for any help

Cool

it's a cliched & wrong impression of imports they r better spec, faster & parts/servicing not a problem many specialists & breakers around now! Depends on yer ongoing budget thou as imports will cost more to run especially on insurance, fish around 2 c wot u can achieve but as a UK scooby owner the buzz is still mind blowing basic questions answered here
Go to a local meet also get an idea i'm sure sum friendly types will show u wot it's all about & give u an idea of commeradery & costs

Minimum you are looking at is 5K for a okay (ish) UK BUT even that puts you in the danger zone could/will cost you thousands a year to run. Servicing (2 a year) gonna cost you minimum 500 (if done at a proper dealer/specialist) they eat tyres and brakes (gonna need a set of each each year if you are doing 12K a year) and do about 15-25mpg.

That before you start putting mods on. I would get a few insurance quotes funniest one I had recently on my modified import was £2000 with 70% NCB and 30+ years old.

Buying is one thing running it is another. I dont want to put you off but you need to do the sums.

I woudl budget a year

1200 Insurance
500 Servicing
400 tyres
150 brakes
250 other bits and pieces important on older cars
160 tax
40 MOT
2000 in fuel (12,000 miles 3.65 a gallon and 22mpg)

£4700 a year not including original car purchase say 5K

First year not much change out of 10K

Cheers mate for the reply

Ive just done a insurance qoute for a UK spec bog standed and with a tracker (do i have to have one..?) and it came out at £1200 (so think inport is out of it) fully comp which is a little more than i was thinking but that was a quick on-line qoute so i'll have to do abit of phoning around, bound to get it down..!

I'll print that document off at work for a little light reading !!

i think you will find that all subarus are imports at some stage.

UK cars like mine are classed as parallel imports meaning that they were made intentionally to be imported into the uk and not jap spec.

If you are being quoted online by tesco like i did remember they will not insure you online even if your car is a parallel import, so you can add another 10% onto your premium because you will lose the discount for sorting it online, also be carefull what they try to give you as excess mine started at £750 excess for a £1200 quid premium.

Hope this gives you some needed details.

dunno wot yer on about parallel imports 2b honest unless yer talking about euro imports as the "turbo 2000" car IS a UK scooby. Sure the reality maybe it was made in Japan or wotever but few cars r manufactured in the UK so that's not a debate
